At Tea and Toast, we’re on a mission to provide seniors and their families with compassionate and personalized support throughout their retirement living transition. We’ve helped thousands of Ottawa seniors and their families find the right mix of care and amenities. Our team provides the education, knowledge, and support that seniors and their families need to make informed decisions about their future that are rooted in their unique needs. Our services include retirement living search, long-term care navigation, eldercare planning, and workshops. Often, when families try to navigate senior living or long-term care on their own, they spend 80+ hours researching and touring communities. Working with our expert advisors can bring the time spent down to about 5 hours and ensure you feel confident about the decisions being made.

Death leaves a to-do list. And someone has to do it.

Find the will.
Find the important documents.
Figure out funeral wishes.
Make decisions.
Contact people.
Answer questions.

Now add grief to the equation. Suddenly, a list that might have felt manageable before can feel completely overwhelming. Planning doesn't prevent grief. And it certainly doesn't make losing someone easier. But knowing where things are, understanding someone's wishes and having important conversations ahead of time can prevent some unnecessary detective work when a family is already dealing with a loss.

You don't have to plan everything at once. Start with one question. “If something happened and I needed to make decisions for you, what would you want me to know?”

Mental Health in Healthcare and Eldercare is so important, for the families and individuals we help, and for us as professionals.

In Tea & Toast's day to day, we hear from caregivers, family members and spouses who are overwhelmed or experiencing caregiver burnout. We speak with seniors who feel isolated. Individuals who have complex medical needs, including mental health diagnoses. The list goes on. On the professional side, us along with other healthcare and eldercare providers experience burnout, compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma.

When you’re trying to make an important decision about a parent’s care, pressure is the last thing you need.

Our job isn’t to tell families what they should do. It’s to understand their situation, educate them about their options and help them determine what makes the most sense for their loved one.

And sometimes, that support continues even after the immediate decision has been made.

A 6-year waitlist can make a long-term care home sound pretty desirable.

But does a long waitlist mean it's a better home?

Not necessarily.

Waitlists are affected by all kinds of things, including location, demand, available beds, room types, and whether a person's care needs match the spaces available.

So instead of asking, “How do we get into the home with the longest waitlist?” it may be more helpful to ask: “Which homes are actually a good fit for my loved one?”

Meal plan flexibility in retirement living might be more flexible than you think.
Some seniors don't want to eat all meals in the community dining room, and we can help look for that. Some families want to use meal times as a check-in between the home and their parents. Some independent suites have full kitchens so there's no need to go down to the dining room, and you could opt in when you want.

An Eldercare Planner's job is to find the best retirement home options for you. The processed is based on what your family is looking for, and where you might find that in the retirement industry.

Is family caregiving taken advantage of by our systems? Are our systems taking family caregivers for granted? Maybe. Or maybe our systems are designed around a family structure that has shifted. Parents are having fewer children, children are living farther away from the rest of their families, etc. So what does someone do if there isn't an adult child to step in? It's a real issue and reality of some seniors.
