📣Dr. Chris McIntosh has been appointed as Lead AI Scientist at University Health Network's Peter Munk Cardiac Centre.

Working closely with clinicians and researchers, Dr. McIntosh will help advance our integrated AI program with a focus on improving outcomes for patients through accelerating research. His work includes exploring how data from smartwatches can help monitor heart failure and developing AI tools that bring together insights from multiple sources of cardiovascular health data.

Transparency and the protection of patient data are crucial to our approach, and to continuously build trust between patients and health care providers who are increasingly using AI to help inform patient care.

Meet the latest expert joining the team leading world-class cardiovascular care at UHN’s Peter Munk Cardiac Centre — Dr. Ali Hage.

As a surgeon-scientist and internationally recognized leader in robotic cardiac surgery, Dr. Hage brings expertise in advanced valve repair, surgical innovation and emerging technologies to the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre and Sprott Department of Surgery as Director of Robotic Cardiac Surgery. Dr. Hage joins us from NYU Langone Health, where he was an attending cardiac surgeon within one of the world’s leading robotic mitral valve programs.

His arrival marks an important milestone as we launch our new cardiac robotic surgery program and continue to lead in mitral valve surgeries. It allows us to continue to expand access to leading-edge treatment options for patients, including more minimally invasive approaches. For many patients that may mean less pain, smaller incisions, shorter hospital stays and a faster return to daily activities.

Congratulations to the 2026 Test Your Limits expedition team on another whirlwind adventure!

Over the course of 20 years and 12 expeditions, a group of doctors, researchers and patients have gathered to raise awareness and support for heart failure research, cardiac transplantation and heart health. Lead by Dr. Heather Ross, cardiologist at UHN's Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, the group hikes, climbs, cycles and journeys around the world, inspiring others to push themselves and to stay active. If a heart transplant recipient can conquer these ambitious treks, then anyone can do it.

"We don’t test our limits to prove they’re there," says Dr. Ross in the expedition blog. "We test them to discover they were never quite where we thought, and to stand with the patients whose courage continues to inspire this journey."

New research supported by UHN's Peter Munk Cardiac Centre and Ted Rogers Centre for Heart Research highlights that heart health among Indigenous Canadians is not only shaped by clinical metrics, but also by emotional, psychological, spiritual, and historical factors.

Drawing from community “sharing circles” in Moosonee, the study identifies the importance of recognizing trauma, strengthening relationships in care, and grounding solutions in community perspectives.

This work underscores the need to better understand how people define wellness and what supports meaningful care.
