Being a pediatrician is more than caring for children.

It’s understanding what it feels like to be the parent sitting in that chair. To worry about a fever. To wonder if that cough is something more. To question whether you’re doing enough. To desperately want someone to listen, take you seriously, and care for your child like they matter.

Because I’m not only a pediatrician. I’m a mom, too.

I know how deeply we love our children. I know how much we want them to be healthy, safe, heard, and supported.

That’s why good care matters so much to me.

Every child deserves a doctor who listens. Every parent deserves to feel heard. And every family deserves care rooted in compassion, knowledge, and genuine understanding.

October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month, a month dedicated to celebrate the abilities and accomplishments of individuals with Down syndrome while promoting true inclusion, acceptance, and advocacy.

What is Down Syndrome? Down syndrome is a genetic condition where a person is born with an extra full or partial copy of chromosome 21 (a condition also known as Trisomy 21). It is the most common chromosomal condition, occurring in roughly 1 in every 700 to 772 births. While it influences physical growth, learning styles, and development, it does not define a person's potential or worth.

This month we are celebrating abilities: Highlighting the unique talents, strengths, and contributions people bring to their schools, workplaces, and communities.

They held it together all day… and melted down at home. 😵‍💫💛

If your child comes home from school and suddenly falls apart over the wrong snack, a missing sock, or absolutely nothing at all—you’re not alone.

School takes a LOT of energy. Kids are listening, learning, following rules, navigating friendships, managing emotions and adapting to new routines all day long.

Sometimes, they hold everything together while they’re at school and then release those emotions once they’re home—the place where they feel safe, comfortable and loved.

So that after-school meltdown may not mean they had a terrible day. It may simply mean they finally feel safe enough to let it all out.

Try offering a snack, some downtime, a little connection and plenty of patience before jumping into questions about their day.

Big feelings after a big day are still feelings that need a little room to breathe.

New classroom. New teacher. New routine. BIG feelings. 💛

Back-to-school time can bring a whole mix of emotions for kids. They might be excited to see friends, curious about their new classroom, nervous about what’s different—or somehow all of those things at once.

And that’s completely okay.

Instead of asking, “Did you have a good day?” try open-ended questions like:
“What was something new today?”
“What made you smile?”
“Was anything tricky?”

Give your child time and space to talk, too. Sometimes the biggest feelings come out when they finally feel comfortable and safe enough to share.

At Kidcrew, we know that every child adjusts in their own way—and sometimes, a little patience, listening and reassurance can make a big difference. 💛
