My dog didn't receive the obedience and authority she needed when I first got her. This was due to my physical health at the the time, but also my unawareness of a house hold member, who was suffering in silence with extreme, long-term depression. With me being unaware, my dog already sensed that someone in our household was struggling with mental illness.

Mindfulness isn't about clearing your mind.

It's about noticing what's already there - the thought, the tension, the feeling -without immediately trying to fix it, fight it, or run from it.

Just noticing. That's the whole practice, more often than not. 🌿🩵

Fight and flight get all the attention.

But there's a third response polyvagal theory names, one that's quieter and often misunderstood: shutdown.

Not panic. Not anger. Just... going still. Going numb. Disappearing inside yourself while still standing in the room.

If that's ever been you, it wasn't weakness. It was your nervous system doing what it thought it needed to do to survive.🌿🫶

Trauma research suggests it is not only the event, but how the nervous system responds and processes overwhelming experiences. Responses may include fight, flight, freeze, or shutdown. 🌿✨

Which response feels familiar? 🫶

Freeze responses may involve feeling stuck, numb, or unable to act. This is a protective response from the autonomic nervous system when overwhelm is too high. 🥶

Have you ever felt emotionally ‘stuck’? 🌿

When a pet becomes ill or begins aging, grief may begin before the actual loss occurs.

Many people experience sadness, anxiety, fear, guilt, or emotional exhaustion while caring for a beloved companion nearing end of life.
Anticipatory grief is deeply personal and valid. 💛🐾

Trauma responses may look quiet; emotional shutdown, overworking, people pleasing, numbness, difficulty resting, or feeling disconnected from emotions.

Many people carry stress responses without fully realizing it. Gentle awareness and support may help them better understand their experiences. 🌿🫶

Did any of these responses resonate with you? 💛

Healing is not always dramatic or visible. Sometimes it begins quietly — drinking water, stepping outside, resting, asking for help, or allowing emotions to exist without judgment. Tiny moments still matter deeply. ⏳
