One question that came up during Monday's group discussion in the online training on Solution-Focused Art Therapy LOM® was:

"When can I use LOM® with my clients in practice?"

My answer would be: Whenever an emotion feels particularly intense or a thought seems to persist and won't let go, creating a LOM® metaphor image can be very helpful.

The image helps to focus and externalize the issue, giving it a specific place outside the person. This creates a sense of distance from the experience and can support emotional regulation by helping the amygdala settle and calm down. At the same time, the metaphor image often opens up new perspectives and possibilities for working with the concern in a solution-focused way.

What begins as a random squiggle can become a shared language.

In contemporary art therapy inspired by Donald Winnicott and later adaptations such as Egger’s squiggle work, the focus shifts away from “analyzing” images and toward relational play, sensory experience, and nonverbal communication.

Especially in work with neurodivergent clients, squiggle exercises are often adapted to be:
• more visually structured
• more sensory-aware
• less interpretive
• safer through repetition and rhythm
• focused on process rather than decoding symbols

A common format:
1. One person makes a mark
2. The other responds
3. The image develops together
4. No correct outcome exists

This reciprocal rhythm can support:
— joint attention
— turn-taking
— symbolic thinking
— connection without the pressure of constant verbal communication or eye contact

The image becomes a meeting space.
