This week our team is at Cannes for the Marché for du film looking for partners and funding to finish the film we’re making about the reburial of 63 Khoi and San ancestors in Namaqualand.
While we’re there, we have published the first part of a three-part written reportage about what we witnessed — the coffins, the ceremony, and the long road home for remains that spent over a century in museum storage.

We are incredibly proud to share that RE:COLLECTION has been selected as one of 11 Spotlighted Projects at Cannes Docs 2026, part of the Marché du Film at the Festival de Cannes. 🔥

The film is currently in early production, and we’ll be presenting the project to the international documentary community this May.

Grateful to the National Film and Video Foundation of South Africa (NFVF) for their support.

On the 23rd of March 2026 the remains of 63 Khoi, San, Nama, Griqua and Korana ancestors were laid to rest at Kinderlê in Namaqualand. They had been stored in museums in Cape Town and Glasgow for over 100 years since they were taken from their graves across the Northern Cape in South Africa.
The ancestors could not be returned to where they had been buried, because the scientists who took them did not record this information. They were reduced to specimens to be studied.

While the reburial cannot undo what was done, it is an effort to rehumanise and remember.

re:collection tells the story of why they were taken and the difficult journey of restoration and reburial.
