🔬 REFLEXOLOGY RESEARCH | 2025

A randomized clinical trial has explored the effects of foot reflexology on pain and anxiety in people with leukaemia undergoing bone marrow aspiration.

The study included 68 participants who completed the trial. Those in the reflexology group received one 30-minute foot reflexology session, while the control group received routine care.

What did the researchers find?

Following the intervention, people who received reflexology experienced significantly lower anxiety compared with those receiving routine care alone.

Importantly, pain experienced during and after the bone marrow aspiration procedure was also significantly lower in the reflexology group.

The researchers additionally monitored physiological measures including blood pressure, pulse and oxygen saturation. While some changes were observed, the clearest findings of the study were the reductions in pain and anxiety.

The authors concluded that foot reflexology may be a valuable non-invasive, supportive approach for helping manage procedural pain and anxiety in people undergoing bone marrow aspiration.

This is particularly interesting for the reflexology profession. Even a single 30-minute session was associated with measurable differences in this clinical setting, adding to the developing evidence around the potential role of reflexology within supportive and integrative healthcare.

While the findings are encouraging, this is one clinical trial in a specific patient population. Further high-quality research is needed to establish how broadly these findings can be applied.

As always, reflexology is a complementary therapy and does not replace appropriate medical treatment or cancer care.

A huge congratulations to my lovely client whose beautiful baby girl arrived on Friday at 39 weeks. 👩‍🍼👶💞
My client started weekly reflexology treatments at 34 weeks to help her body and mind prepare for labour.
Having this fast natural labour in her first pregnancy is absolutely amazing for her. 💞

Pregnancy reflexology is tailored for each client and the stage of pregnancy they are at. 🌿👣🤰🏻

From 38 weeks gestation, stimulation of the pituitary gland reflex can aid in the production of oxytocin (labour hormone).

Oxytocin stimulates uterine contractions and helps these contractions become stronger and more coordinated, which in turn supports the progression of natural labour. 🌿👣👶

🔬NEW REFLEXOLOGY RESEARCH | 2026

A recent clinical trial explored the effects of foot reflexology on restless legs syndrome (RLS) and sleep quality in people living with multiple sclerosis (MS).

The findings are encouraging, with participants experiencing improvements in restless legs symptoms and sleep quality following the reflexology intervention.

Research like this is important as we continue to build the evidence base around reflexology and its potential role as a complementary approach to supporting wellbeing and symptom management.

An interesting point from the authors: the study recommends that nurses receive reflexology training. This recommendation relates to the potential integration of reflexology into supportive nursing care. It should not be interpreted as suggesting that reflexology is exclusively a nursing intervention or should only be provided by nurses. Professionally trained reflexologists already practise reflexology as a dedicated complementary therapy.

Why a Butterfly Touch Therapists Register Matters for Cancer Care 🦋

When someone is living with cancer, every aspect of their wellbeing matters — physical, emotional, and psychological. Many people seek complementary therapies to help manage stress, anxiety, treatment side effects, and the emotional impact of a cancer diagnosis. However, not all therapists have the specialist knowledge required to work safely and effectively with cancer clients.

This is why having a Butterfly Touch Therapists Register is so important.

A dedicated register helps individuals, families, healthcare professionals, and support organisations quickly identify therapists who have received appropriate cancer-specific training and understand the unique needs of people affected by cancer. These therapists are informed about treatment considerations, contraindications, adaptations required during and after cancer treatment, and the importance of working within evidence-based, client-centred practice.

The benefits of a specialist register include:

🦋 Improved Safety – Clients can feel confident that therapists understand how cancer and its treatments may affect the body and can adapt sessions appropriately.

🦋 Professional Standards – A register demonstrates that therapists have undertaken recognised training and are committed to maintaining high standards of practice.

🦋 Greater Confidence for Clients – Finding a qualified therapist can be overwhelming during an already challenging time. A trusted register provides reassurance and peace of mind.

🦋 Better Collaboration with Healthcare Teams – Therapists with specialist knowledge are better equipped to communicate professionally with healthcare providers when appropriate, ensuring a more integrated approach to care.

🦋 Access to Compassionate, Informed Support – Cancer clients deserve therapists who understand their journey and can provide support with sensitivity, knowledge, and respect.

The Butterfly Touch Therapists Register is more than a directory—it is a commitment to safe, informed, and compassionate care. By connecting cancer clients with appropriately trained therapists, we help ensure that complementary therapy remains a supportive and empowering part of the cancer care journey.

Because when it comes to cancer support, qualifications, knowledge, and understanding matter 🦋

I have seen in some of my clients how regular reflexology has helped their arthritic pain 👣🌿🥰, and now there is clinical evidence to prove its effectiveness in pain management.👣🌿🥰

Osteoarthritis can affect far more than the joint itself. For many people, it can interfere with walking, bending, climbing stairs, getting dressed, sleeping well, and simply moving through the day with ease.

One study published in Advances in Rehabilitation looked at the effects of foot reflexology in 20 people with osteoarthritis of the hip joint. Participants received a series of 8 reflexology sessions, and their pain, stiffness and daily function were assessed before and after using recognised measures including the WOMAC questionnaire and the Numerical Rating Scale.

After the sessions, researchers reported improvements in average WOMAC scores, reduced pain intensity, improved function in everyday activities, a reduction in reported use of pain medication, and improved sleep quality among participants.

This adds to the growing conversation around reflexology as a supportive, complementary therapy - especially for people managing ongoing discomfort, reduced mobility, stress and the day-to-day impact of chronic conditions.

Reflexology works gently, with the whole person in mind. And that support matters.
