🚨 FIRST AID MYTH-BUSTER: “I’ll leave it to the professionals.”

When someone suffers a cardiac arrest, waiting for the professionals to arrive isn’t an option.

The first few minutes matter.
💚 Recognise what’s happening.
❤️ Act quickly.
💙 Start CPR and use a defibrillator if one is available.

You don’t need to be a medical professional to make a difference. You need to know what to do — and have the confidence to do it.

That’s why first aid training matters. It gives people the knowledge and confidence to act when every second counts.

Don’t wait for someone else to take action. Be ready.

🚨 ANAPHYLAXIS: WOULD YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO?

This September marks an important step forward in allergy safety.
Benedict’s Law has brought new statutory allergy-safety requirements into force for schools in England, including whole-school allergy policies, staff training and spare adrenaline auto-injectors for emergencies.

Here in Northern Ireland, the principles of Benedict’s Law are also being considered as part of a review of current school guidance, making allergy awareness and emergency preparedness more important than ever.

But legislation aside, one thing remains universal:
In anaphylaxis, knowing what to do quickly can save a life.

Don’t assume someone else will know what to do.

Be prepared. Be confident. Know the signs.

Would you know what to do?

Someone collapses in front of you. What’s your first move?

In an emergency, those first few minutes can make a huge difference.
Knowing what to do and having the confidence to act could help save a life.

☎️ Call 999
❤️ Start CPR
⚡ Get an AED if one is available

It’s easy to think “someone else will know what to do.” But what if that someone is you?

First aid isn't just a workplace requirement. It’s a life skill.
Be informed. Be prepared. Get trained.

Recovery position or CPR — would you know which one to use? 🚨

Someone is unconscious. You’ve called 999 and checked their breathing.

What happens next depends on one crucial thing: whether they are breathing normally.

🟢 UNCONSCIOUS BUT BREATHING NORMALLY?
Place them in the recovery position (unless you suspect a spinal injury), keep monitoring their breathing and stay with them until help arrives.

🔴 NOT BREATHING NORMALLY?
Start CPR immediately and follow the instructions from the 999 call handler. If an AED is available, have someone bring it to you.
Knowing the difference matters.

The recovery position helps keep the airway open in someone who is unconscious but breathing.

CPR helps maintain blood flow when someone is in cardiac arrest and not breathing normally.

Throughout this series, we’ve talked about recognising unconsciousness, calling for help, checking breathing and knowing what action to take next.

But reading about first aid and having the confidence to perform it in a real emergency are two very different things.

That’s where training matters.

At McCann Training Solutions, we give people the practical skills and confidence to step forward when someone needs help.

Learn it. Practise it. Be ready to use it.

🚨 CALL 999. CHECK BREATHING. KNOW WHAT TO DO NEXT.

When someone collapses, those first few moments matter.

If they’re unresponsive:
📞 Call 999 immediately or ask someone else to make the call.
👀 Check their breathing. Look, listen and feel for normal breathing for no more than 10 seconds.
⚠️ Gasping or irregular breaths are not normal breathing.

If they’re not breathing normally, cardiac arrest should be suspected, and CPR needs to begin immediately.
The emergency call handler will guide you through what to do next, but having the confidence to recognise the signs and act quickly can make a vital difference.
At McCann Training Solutions, we don’t just teach first aid for the certificate.

We teach it so that, when the moment comes, you know what to do.

Every second counts. Every link matters. 🔗

Someone becomes unresponsive.

Would you know what to do next?

Unconsciousness can happen at any time and for many different reasons, including fainting, a head injury, stroke, epilepsy, diabetes, poisoning or a heart-related emergency.

You may not immediately know what has caused it.

What matters is knowing how to respond.

First aid training gives you the practical skills and confidence to remain calm, assess the situation and take action while professional help is on its way.

You can’t change what happens. You can change how you respond to it.

Follow this week as we explain the first steps to take when someone is unresponsive.

🟡 STEP 4: Advanced Medical Care & Recovery

The final link in the Chain of Survival is the care someone receives after emergency services arrive.

By this stage, paramedics and hospital teams take over, providing advanced treatment and specialist care to give someone the best possible chance of recovery.
But here's something worth remembering...

The Chain of Survival doesn't begin in hospital. It begins with you.

By recognising a cardiac arrest, calling for help, starting CPR and using a defibrillator, you've already given someone their best chance before the ambulance even arrives.

Over the past week, we've followed the four links that save lives:

🟦 Step 1: Recognise a cardiac arrest and call 999 / 112 / 911
🟥 Step 2: Start CPR immediately
🟩 Step 3: Use a defibrillator (AED)
🟨 Step 4: Advanced medical care and recovery

Each link is important. But together, they form a chain that can make the difference between life and death.

You don't need to be a healthcare professional to save a life.
You just need the confidence to act.

If you'd like to gain the knowledge and confidence to respond in an emergency, we'd love to help.

🟢 STEP 3: Use a Defibrillator (AED)

The third link in the Chain of Survival is using a defibrillator (AED) as soon as one is available.

Many people worry they'll use it incorrectly. The truth is, AEDs are designed for ordinary people, not just medical professionals.

Once you switch it on, it gives clear, step-by-step voice instructions and will only deliver a shock if one is needed. You can't accidentally shock someone who doesn't need it.

Remember what we've covered so far:

🟦 Step 1: Recognise a cardiac arrest and call 999 / 112 / 911.🟥 Step 2: Start CPR immediately to keep oxygen-rich blood circulating.

Now it's time for the AED to do its job.

I often describe it like this: CPR fills the bottle. The defibrillator provides the spark that gives the heart the best chance of beating normally again.

The sooner CPR and an AED are used together, the greater the chance of survival.
Tomorrow, we'll complete the Chain of Survival with Step 4: Advanced medical care and recovery.

🟡 STEP 2: Start CPR Immediately

Once you've called for help, the next link in the Chain of Survival is to start CPR as soon as possible.

People often think a defibrillator is the most important part of saving a life. It's an incredible tool, but CPR is what buys time.

I often explain it like this:

The heart is a pump. CPR keeps oxygen-rich blood moving around the body, like filling a bottle before you can switch the pump back on. The more you keep that blood circulating, the better the chance a defibrillator has of restoring a normal heart rhythm when it arrives.

Don't worry about being perfect. If someone is in cardiac arrest, doing something is always better than doing nothing. Your actions could make all the difference while emergency services are on their way.

Tomorrow, we'll look at Step 3: Using a defibrillator (AED) and why these devices are designed for anyone to use.
