What happens when a passion for dance becomes part of your day job?

For Bob, a Care Assistant at Anchor - St Edith's Court, it means bringing music, movement and plenty of encouragement to regular Zest sessions with residents.

Bob has been delivering Zest at the care home since completing his training, and says it’s his favourite part of the job.

“It’s my favourite part of the job. We all feel good after it.”

It’s lovely to see Bob using something he’s passionate about to help residents stay active, have fun and enjoy time together. 💜 Zest Wellbeing

🏭💜 Memory Lane Monday – The Mill Arts Centre 💜🏭

This week, we’re taking a trip down memory lane to one of Banbury’s fascinating landmarks — The Mill Arts Centre!

But before it was a place for theatre, music and community events, it had a very different life…

🌾 From grain mill to arts centre

The building began as a Victorian grain warehouse and waterside mill beside the Oxford Canal.

The Lamprey family played an important part in its history. John Lamprey bought a corn merchandising business in 1834, which later expanded to the canal at Spiceball Park. The family business processed and distributed grain, seeds and animal fodder, alongside other industries including coal, lime kilns and brickworks.

The mill remained an important part of Banbury’s industrial life until the late 1960s. 🏭

🎭 A new chapter

In the 1970s, the building was acquired and eventually transformed from an industrial mill into a community arts venue.

Then, in October 1990, it officially opened as The Mill Arts Centre, complete with a 250-seat theatre and arts spaces. 🎭

The very first production was W***y Russell’s Our Day Out, performed by the Banbury Cross Players.

Today, The Mill continues to be a much-loved part of Banbury’s cultural community. 💜

🌾 Do you remember the mill before it became an arts centre?
🚤 Do you remember the canal and Spiceball area years ago?
🎭 Have you ever watched a show at The Mill?
🎶 Have you been to a concert, dance or community event there?
🏭 What do you remember about Banbury’s industrial past?

From grain, canals and industry to theatre, music and community — The Mill has certainly had an incredible transformation! 💜

🚤💜 Memory Lane Monday – Banbury Canal 💜🚤

This week, we’re taking a trip down memory lane along the Oxford Canal in Banbury — a fascinating part of our town’s history! 🌿

📅 30th March 1778 marked an important day for Banbury, as the Oxford Canal officially reached the town. The arrival was celebrated locally, with the first shipment of coal arriving by canal. 🛶⛏️

For the next eight years, Banbury became the southern terminus of the canal. Goods travelling further towards Oxford had to be transferred from the boats onto road transport. 🚚

The canal eventually continued towards Oxford, with the route completed around 1790.

🛠️ Banbury’s famous Tooley’s Boatyard

The arrival of the canal also helped establish Tooley’s Boatyard, which became an important place for building and repairing traditional wooden narrowboats.

In the 1940s, writer Tom Rolt based himself at Tooley’s while refitting his narrowboat Cressy. His experiences later helped inspire the preservation movement for Britain’s canals. 📖🚤

Today, Tooley’s remains an important piece of Banbury’s canal heritage.

Did you remember seeing narrowboats on the canal?
🚤 Did you ever travel on a canal boat?
🎣 Did you go fishing along the canal?
🚶 Did you enjoy walks along the towpath?
🏭 Do you remember the canal being used for transporting goods?

A little bit of Banbury history can bring back a lifetime of memories. 💜
