If you haven't watched The Experiment, I urge you to do so. As Mat Fraser, one of the presenters, states, it is “living proof that you can quite easily manipulate people's opinions with propaganda-style information”.
As I stated in my previous post, this is actually happening in society every day. Watching the show may help people recognise how certain ‘information’ about those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) is being presented in a way that portrays them as a huge burden on the state that ‘needs tackling’.
Here are some quotes from individuals who eventually came to realise that they were part of an experiment and were being brainwashed into believing that Segrilife was relieving this so-called burden on the state:
“They're looking at the bottom line and only the bottom line. They're not looking at human satisfaction. They're just looking at numbers.”
“The UK, and not just the UK, actually globally, there are things bubbling at the moment, and we're in a bit of a precipice, and it could go hard in the wrong direction unless people do something. And people in the UK right now are not doing anything.”
“It's made me feel very ignorant. There's been a lot of things that I thought I was probably a bit more clued up on.”
“Like with that assisted dying bill, things slowly change and we don't necessarily realise it. It's all very well looking back on history and saying that will never happen again. But we're in quite a dangerous time here, and I think there's lots of mixed messaging, lots of subtle messaging.”
But my favourite quote from the show is:
“When certain things are presented in a certain way to suit a certain narrative, the general population, they won't know any better.”
And this is exactly what is happening with the proposed SEND reforms.
Wrapped up in shiny paper and finished with a big, fat bow, the SEND reforms are being dressed up as progressive solutions to a modern-day problem. To borrow the documentary's own marketing language, are we really being sold ‘progressive solutions to a modern social “problem”’?
However, in reality, the proposed SEND reforms risk removing:
The right to provision based on an individual child's assessed needs.
The right to legally enforceable provision.
The right to an EHC needs assessment and plan.
The right to request and secure a specific school placement.
The right to legal enforceability.
Yeah, really progressive!
Tonight Channel 4 launches The Experiment, fronted by actor and writer Mat Fraser, and presenter and disability rights activist Sophie Morgan. This bold new documentary uses a meticulously constructed experiment to ask a disturbing question: would you recognise cruelty if it was dressed up as care?....
