Kinetic Control or The Performance Matrix – what’s the difference?

They share a movement-science heritage, but they serve different needs.

Kinetic Control®
A clinical education and reasoning framework focused on movement assessment, retraining and clinical management. It helps clinicians develop their expertise, assess movement strategies and use those findings to better manage and support the patient through rehabilitation.

The Performance Matrix®
A movement assessment, reporting and retraining system that also develops practitioner skill sets, with a stronger focus on supporting performance outcomes. It helps practitioners profile movement, identify priorities, build programmes and track change over time.

So while both are built around understanding movement:

Kinetic Control elevates the clinician’s expertise and supports the clinical management of the patient.

The Performance Matrix develops practitioner skills while providing a structured system to support and improve performance outcomes.

Together, they offer complementary ways for professionals to apply movement science across clinical and performance practice.

💬 Why Kinetic Control?
“Kinetic Control provides clinicians with a logical and clear framework to identify movement impairments and understand which assessment and retraining strategies to apply in practice.”

Different countries. Different clinical challenges. One question that connects us: how can we make better decisions for the patient in front of us?

From October to January, I’ll be teaching across Egypt, Malta, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, the UK, Pakistan and the Philippines.

My aim in every session is to help physiotherapists connect assessment findings with meaningful treatment decisions—asking better questions, thinking critically and making sense of complex musculoskeletal presentations.

Teaching is also an opportunity to listen. The experiences colleagues bring from different healthcare systems make each discussion richer and challenge me to keep developing as a clinician and educator.

I’m looking forward to reconnecting with familiar colleagues and meeting new ones along the way.

Meet Thomas Karlinger, a Kinetic Control tutor and leading physiotherapist based in Perg, Austria.

Thomas is the Leading Physiotherapist at Perform Physio and has more than 15 years of experience in musculoskeletal practice. He teaches across Austria, including Linz, Vienna and Klagenfurt, and has a particular clinical interest in spinal pain.

What started as a search for one more clinical tool quickly became much more:
🎤 “Initially I wanted to do KC to get another tool in my box – then it became my toolbox.”

Thomas’ approach to practice is centred on guiding patients to take ownership of their recovery:
🎤 “I am always happy to tell the patient: all the work that was needed to get you out of pain was done by yourself. I was just here to guide you.”

His practical advice to patients is simple but powerful:
🎤 “Consistency trumps intensity.”

Alongside his clinical and teaching work, Thomas brings a broad and unique background to his role. He has been a physiotherapist since 2011, holds a Master’s degree in MSK, has achieved MACP Fellowship, and has also worked abroad in the UK. Outside of physiotherapy, he is also a black belt in Chinese and Filipino martial arts.

Thomas speaks German and English, helping him connect with practitioners and patients across different settings.

We’re proud to have Thomas as part of the Kinetic Control tutor network.
