Research matters because people matter.

For Holly, supporting Sight Research UK is both personal and professional.

As Head of Clinical Quality and Patient Safety at , she sees first-hand how advances in eye research can transform lives. But she also knows what sight loss looks like beyond the clinic. Her grandma is living with dry age-related macular degeneration, and watching her gradually lose her central vision has reinforced just how urgently better treatments are needed.

This September, Holly is taking on The Big Half to help fund the next generation of sight-saving research.

Diabetic retinopathy is one of the leading causes of sight loss in working-age adults.

But researchers are working to change that.

In this video, hear directly from Michael O'Hare, one of the scientists behind Sight Research UK's funded research, as he explains how his work could help detect diabetic eye disease earlier and improve outcomes for people living with diabetes.

Every breakthrough starts with research. And every research project brings us one step closer to protecting sight for future generations.

Could AI predict sight-threatening diabetic eye disease before it develops?

That's exactly what researchers funded by Sight Research UK are working towards.

Every year, millions of people with diabetes attend NHS eye screening. While these appointments can detect damage that's already happening, they can't reliably predict who is most likely to develop sight-threatening diabetic retinopathy in the future.

Professor Tim Jackson and his team are developing AI that combines routine retinal photographs with health information to identify those at greatest risk.

If successful, this technology could help people receive treatment sooner, personalise NHS screening, and prevent avoidable sight loss for millions living with diabetes.

It's a powerful example of how research can turn innovative ideas into real improvements in patient care.

Some people run for a personal best. Mickey and Kerri are running for something much bigger.

This September, the sisters will take on The Big Half to raise money for sight-saving research. With a family history of cataracts, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, they know just how precious vision is - and why better treatments and earlier diagnosis matter so much.

Their story is a reminder that behind every fundraiser is a deeply personal reason to make a difference.

If you can, please support Mickey and Kerri as they raise vital funds to help accelerate the research that could change lives.
