Project MAMA

Project MAMA support women who are refugees, seeking asylum or have irregular immigration status throughout pregnancy, childbirth and in early parenting.

Project MAMA is a registered charity based in Bristol launched in March 2018 that offers free, confidential and individual-focused holistic support to women throughout pregnancy, labour and childbirth, and those first few weeks of parenthood. We currently support pregnant refugees, asylum-seekers, survivors of modern slavery and human trafficking and other displaced women. We focus on this demographic because of the extreme difficulty women can have accessing the NHS, the language barriers they face and the extreme social isolation they may experience. Project MAMA is a hive of midwives, activists, doulas and birth companions who form a peer network of skills, support and solidarity for women and their children. Our ethos is to encourage independence and bolster natural resilience women have by providing a safe and nurturing space to unpack ideas and wishes around birth & support in early motherhood. We are a sisterhood network, promoting a women’s right to choose and we facilitate community. We promote an understanding of a woman’s rights and entitlements surrounding maternity healthcare in these challenging times.

A few things you might not know about Project MAMA… 👀

🧡 MAMA stands for Maternity Action for Migrants and Asylum Seekers

🤝 We started as a volunteer solidarity network.
For our first 2 years, Project MAMA was run entirely by volunteers. Today, we have 9 staff, but our incredible volunteers still make everything we do possible… and some of them have been with us since the very beginning!

🌍 Immigration status is never a barrier to our support.
Both our projects are open to mamas from any migrant background. We deliberately keep our remit broad because we believe status should never be a barrier to support.

How long have you been a part of the Project MAMA village?

Did you know there are midwifery support workers at our Bumps & Babes group?

They’re here so expectant mamas can ask questions and chat through any concerns in a trusted community setting. Women can also connect with maternity services and find out what support is available to them.

Asylum-seeking and refugee mamas face barriers to maternity services. This partnership is just one of the ways we’re working to make care more accessible to migrant communities in Bristol.

There continues to be a huge focus on people seeking sanctuary in the news and in our politics.

But how often do we stop to look at the facts?

🟠 Refugees and people seeking asylum make up less than 1% of the UK’s population (UNHCR).

🟠 People seeking asylum have fled abuse, conflict and other atrocities in search of safety.

🟠 Under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Article 14), everyone has the right to seek asylum from persecution in other countries.

✊ Migration is a Human Right. Solidarity with refugees.

We’re supporting the National Year of Reading! 📚🧡

As part of the campaign, the is supplying Project MAMA with a selection of dual language books, which will be available at our Hubs. Mamas and their little ones can enjoy these at our drop-ins, or borrow them to read at home.

For some parents, finding stories in their language is a challenge. We want to enable more families to access books and enjoy reading together.

If you’re learning English, story time with your babe can also be a relaxed way to practise and build confidence.

We can’t wait to see these books become part of our MAMAhub Play & Grow sessions ⭐

Visit the link in our bio for more info on the and ideas for enjoying books, even with the littlest ones 📖

Yesterday we took the train to Weston-super-Mare with 20 mamas and 32 babes 🚂🏖️

We spent the day paddling in the sea, eating ice creams, building sandcastles, and watching the little ones run around on the beach.

A big thank you to all the mamas who brought snacks to share, from delicious curries, to Sudanese coffee and homemade Eritrean bread. It made the day feel even more special!

We’re all feeling a bit tired and sunburnt this morning (and are still finding sand in our bags!) but very grateful for the chance to get out of the city and enjoy time together.

Swipe to see photos of the trip and, at the end, a lovely text a mama sent us when she got home.

Pregnancy and early parenthood can be an incredibly vulnerable time, especially if you’re in an unfamiliar place without any friends or family around you.

We match mamas with experienced Mother Companions, who offer a listening ear, gentle encouragement, and practical help as they prepare for birth and adjust to life with a new babe.

“Everyone knows that pregnancy is a hard and sensitive time, but I was shown how to look after my baby when he came. I was guided through the time.”

We are so grateful to this mama for sharing what Project MAMA’s support meant to her 🧡
