👕✨ More than just a T-shirt…

Our Ambassador T-shirts are finished! 💥

This is slow fashion.

This project has become a journey through every stage of clothing production, helping our Ambassadors understand what really goes into making a garment from scratch.

So far we've:
🧵 Researched different fabrics and compared samples.
🧵 Chosen the most suitable fabric for comfort, durability and wear.
🧵 Washed 24 metres of 100% white cotton interlock ready for sewing.
🧵 Designed and ordered our own screen print.
🧵 Sourced cuffing in our Sew Positive brand colours.
🧵 Downloaded, printed and collected full-size A0 patterns ready for cutting.

Behind the scenes, our wonderful volunteers have been working alongside tutor Michelle to carefully plan the best fabric layout, reducing waste and making sure we're ready to teach our Ambassadors to sew their own T-shirts.

Every Ambassador was able to personalise their own t-shirt. Ambassadors chose from our neck ribbing colours, decided between different necklines, pockets, and chose long or short sleeves to create something that reflects their own style. They'll also be using embroidery and hand stitching to personally customise t-shirts!

We're also making fabric Ambassador badges to wear during our services, helping our community recognise and celebrate their role.

This is slow fashion. Taking time to understand materials, craftsmanship, sustainability and the value of the clothes we wear. We can't wait to see everyone's personalised Ambassador t-shirts.

We just finished our Sew Creative course!!

Our amazing group finished upcycling charity shop bought men's shirts into blouses. Thank you so much to our wonderful tutor Michelle and helpful volunteers.

Sew Positive trip to the V&A East Storehouse! 💫

Participants braved the heat to explore the highlights, including the David Bowie centre and a chance to see curated pieces from the archive.

Trips like these remind us that creativity is about much more than perfection or the finished product. It's about connection, curiosity, and shared experiences. It can be so valuable to step outside the sewing room, discover something new, and enjoy it alongside others.

✨ A little milestone that means a lot.

Today our wonderful marketing lead, Sarah, and her husband Mike (who both also support the amazing Phoenix Trust) installed our new Sew Positive sign above the door. Thank you both! 💙

Six years ago this week, our CEO Melissa and her friend Jane from were sewing face masks during the pandemic, and Melissa was setting up the charity as a result of seeing the positive effect sewing had on isolated communities. We could not have imagined back then that one day we’d be running a charity supporting hundreds of people a year, with a home of its own and our name proudly above the door.

It’s more than a sign. It’s a place where people can belong, connect, learn new skills and improve their mental health through creativity.

We can’t wait to welcome both familiar and new faces through these doors.

Our doors are open… and our bobbins are full. 🧵💙

Upcycling Charity NewBeginnings

We’ve started training our volunteers to use our donated industrial sewing machines, with the expert help of from

Learning to use industrial machines is a bit like going from driving a small car to a so it’s vital to understand safety and speed.

The great thing about these machines is they can sew through thick fabrics and multiple layers, giving our community the chance to learn new skills and extend learning and creativity.

This was the first of three tutored sessions for volunteers, and we are developing a passport for participants to use them. This is all unfunded work for our small charity, so supporting our work will help our participants access these machines, while we have also saved them from landfill ♻️🐝🤩

SERVICE CANCELLATION THURSDAY THIS WEEK

Due to the current heatwave and NHS heat-health advice, we have made the decision to cancel Thursday’s sessions at the Hub - Sewcialise Good Mood Cafe with CPSL Mind and Ambassador Programme. Ambassadors have alternative arrangements which have been communicated to that group.

The building is currently too hot for us to safely deliver our usual activities, and we want to make sure we are looking after the wellbeing of all participants, volunteers, tutors and staff.

We will make a decision about Saturday’s Sewing Café tomorrow afternoon once we have reviewed the latest forecast and guidance. If it is safe to do so, we may run a shorter session with reduced hours, for example 10-2. We will make a decision on this later tmw.

Thank you for your understanding. Please take care, keep cool and stay hydrated during the hot weather.

And today our volunteer Fiona came in with her absolutely stunning Sew Positive lanyard. We encourage volunteers to express their creativity and individuality with a basic set of instructions. Fiona has not only bordered with crochet, but has appliquéd, embroidered her name, featured a boro piece and some darning…all in the Sew Positive brand colours! 🥹❤️👏🏻🧵🧶
