What a night! 🧵💗

More than 60 people joined us for our AGM in our very own Sew Positive Hub - and what made it really special was having so many of our participants and Ambassadors there, right at the heart of the evening. Because they are Sew Positive and such an important part of our journey.

Our lovely K2Tog participants even crocheted the flowers for our tables 🌸 and so many people worked incredibly hard behind the scenes to make the whole evening feel warm, welcoming and very Sew Positive. Thank you, thank you, thank you. 🥹

It’s quite something to think that we now run 5–7 services every week, with this amazing community of participants, Ambassadors, volunteers, tutors, trustees and supporters around us.

And after a VERY busy summer - two huge funding applications submitted, our first big lottery monitoring report, our Annual Review written and printed, annual accounts completed, and our new portal up and running (and successfully checking in our AGM guests! 🙌) - after today I’m off for two weeks.

My first proper two-week break since 2019! ☀️

And perhaps the biggest milestone of all? I can actually switch off, because Ollie is holding the fort and we now have the people and systems around us that make that possible.

Feeling very grateful - and very ready for a holiday! 💗🧵 [CEO Melissa]

🌿 The Struggle for Light – and what an incredible thing to see our community represented in it.

We were so proud to visit this beautiful immersive installation at Cambridge University Botanic Garden Cambridge University Botanic Garden today, featuring work by Sew Positive participants Lynn and Hannah, who have been working on the project since last October alongside artists Annabel Lee and Melissa Fu.

What makes The Struggle for Light particularly special is the collaboration behind it. Artists and people from different community groups across Cambridge – including Abbey People – have brought their different skills, stories and creative practices together into one extraordinary mixed-media installation.

We’ve watched Lynn’s distinctive creative style emerge through her textile art at Sew Positive, and seeing her work become part of an installation like this is just wonderful. And Hannah’s beautiful watercolours are breathtaking. We know how much work, thought and commitment they have both put into this project over many months, and we couldn’t be prouder of them. ❤️

There’s something else we really love about this project too: connection between communities doesn’t have to stop at the door of one organisation.

Partnerships like this allow people to discover other creative spaces, meet new people, build confidence and find opportunities beyond the services they originally joined. That cross-fertilisation of ideas, friendships and support is exactly how a stronger community grows.

And hats off to Louise and the Communities Team at Cambridge University Botanic Garden for making it happen. This is the first time the Garden has hosted an installation of this kind, and their Community Membership also enables groups such as Sew Positive to bring participants into the Garden free of charge – removing a financial barrier that might otherwise prevent people from experiencing this wonderful place.

We brought a group from Sew Positive along today to support Lynn and Hannah and experience the installation – and it really is worth seeing.

When our good friends and partners at CPSL Mind asked if the Sew Positive community could help make doggy bandanas for their fundraising dog walk, we understood the assignment. 🐶🧵💙

And what a lovely project it turned into!

Participants and volunteers across our services have been cutting, sewing and finishing this fabulous pile of bandanas. They’ve been brilliant for newer sewists to build confidence, fun for more experienced makers too, and a perfect way to put some of our colourful fabric stash to good use.

It’s also exactly the sort of collaboration we love: sharing skills, using materials creatively, making together and one local charity community supporting another. 💙

Here we are handing over the finished collection to Liv from CPSL Mind, ably assisted by Seve, Sew Positive’s CDO (Chief Dog Officer), who came along for some very important modelling duties.

Modelling: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Sitting still: ⭐️ 😂

The bandanas will be heading to Walkies for Wellbeing in September and we can’t wait to see some lucky pooches wearing them! 🐾
