****Have you ever considered why and how ethical considerations in clinical research came to be? If not, here is an interesting video with many learning points. Watch the video and state your observation and learning points in the comments. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wFqyQxAPnM

Why this matters!
As experienced researchers or those in making, understanding the premises of some ethical principles guiding clinical research eliminate barriers to effective and efficient ethics application. This builds decision making capacity and establishes the capability of research sites.

All forms of research( those involving investigational medicinal products, randomisation, science based studies, clinical trials of medicinal products and devices, or devices only, human tissues, and observational studies) require ethics approval from a regulatory body.

As a principal investigator[PI] or co-PI, oversight in this area determines the success of a study. Know the type of study involved, the type of participants and recruitment approach required, the type of data to collect, and safety measures in place, and the regularity body to grant approval. This saves time and resources.

While approval is needed, the regulatory body to grant certain approval depends largely on the type of research and nature of participants involved. This differs by countries and health departments as defined by the regulatory framework guiding research. Therefore, as part of procedural safety measures, clinical research must be conducted based on ethically corroborated principles, with clear and unbiased intentions, bearing in mind patients' safety and voluntary participation rights. Please share your learning points in the comments after watching. Have a good day!

As we commemorate the International Nurses Day 2026, in recognition of nurses' contributions towards the advancement of quality patient care, we must consider how research can be embedded in clinical nursing practice around the world.

Globally, nurses' awareness of research and consequent involvement in leading research at international and national stages remain limited. This gap underpinned by systemic and personal factors can be addressed when nurses who are the future of sustainable health systems have a safe work environment, and are empowered with needed knowledge to oversee projects to improve patient care and clinical outcomes. On this beautiful day of felicitation, I celebrate fellow nurses on this platform whose interest in research and compassionate nursing care have come to the fore.

I equally appreciate everyone who reached out during days of social media absence linked to bereavement and related human factors I could not share online. Nurse Lally, thanks a bunch for your constant calls and Facebook messages. Japhet Y Galaboyi ,you have proven that nurses can still look out for each other in every circumstance - your LinkedIn messages are truly appreciated. Attah Kashim, a true comrade and ardent research enthusiast, I am loyal sir. Greg Simon your calls where constant reminders of true friendship- we can only live in this world once and while we are still here, true friendship based on humanistic values is all that matters. Thank you all for your support. Happy International Day 2026.

NB: A special mention of appreciation to my mentor in Abakaliki, Nigeria. Sir, your note of support inspired hope that kept me going during this difficult time. Thanks for all you do for others and may you be rewarded greatly.

After all I have been exposed to in the past few days, I have this to note, ‘’life is a privilege with no guarantee of ownership or possession; therefore, every day, hour, minute, and second of wholeness in body, mind, and spirit should be celebrated.’’

On Monday, last week, I was on a phone to a friend whom I share some deep thoughts with. In this conversation, I stated with so much passion, how the month of March is my soft life month—I made particular emphasis on my plans to travel to countries I had dreamt about years back and how my time would make so much difference on different fronts.

Unknown to me, the next day, Tuesday 3/3/26, had different doses of events with negative impact on me and everyone around us. As this day unfolded, the realities around it triggered negative emotions compounded by other events that unfolded over the weekend of the same week.

It has been manic to note the least, but we are divinely secured as we hold onto our belief in divine healing and gradual recovery amongst others.

There are times some realities around us have implications we cannot explain with any known theory other than nature’s will and power. Such moments call for divine insights for strength to stay resilient in all.

As I think about everything, I rely on divine and other forms of support to stay hopeful for a place in the sun(idiom).
Thanks for your support through this season.

In this life, appreciate those whose efforts paved ways for your current positive realities for they are divine conduits of blessings; they should be celebrated for the impact they make. To all nurses on the ward and looking after patients with care and compassion, you are appreciated. May you all be rewarded accordingly.

Just like nurses in other fields, those in research are beautiful, smart, and strategic in the use of evidence-mapping and synthesis for quality improvement. For your endless efforts in literature search, analysis, and interpretation and more - thank you very much.

Regarding the last post made on this platform on the 25/02/26, those who indicated interest in exploring a primary or secondary research idea and have their papers publish on recognised journals will be updated by the end of the tomorrow 05/03/26.

The update will focus on information about the next stage of the opportunity to guide deeper understanding of the idea and implementation strategy.

In a society where research evidence is critical to policy development across all arms of nursing and development, nurses, midwives, and allied health professionals with great research skills and competencies have a great edge in advancing care through different strategies. Be a part of this great initiative with ripple- research effects.

Here are reasons why writing a research background of the study is a struggle:

- Like other parts of a research paper, the background section is integral to the success of the research. The background contains a well defined thesis statement[ TS] and more. It is that statement that encapsulates the main idea or focus of the research with directional implications in all forms of research. However, poor understanding of the meaning of the background of the study and what it should contain is a major pitfall for students globally.

The background section has many aspects including a TS. A well-written thesis statement provides visionary input to the whole research, any critical readers looks out for it first. It gives an overview of the research in one statement which is not professional empowering and educationally intuitive. Despite these, the act of writing a structured TS remains a major problem for students across different disciplines including nursing. It is a major cause of shallow-written projects or researches with poor data quality.

A well established review of facts related to disease characterisation provide a rich epidemiology background, offering deeper insights to the scope of the problem phenomenon being addressed. Epidemiology, relates to causes, effects, and determinants of a given disease and it is useful in the narration of research problem scope. However, knowing how each parameters of reporting of epi-related facts drives or underpins a given research improves research quality significantly. In health-related disciplines, an epidemiological review is inevitable, so why students struggle with it conceptualisation and application?

Poorly written epidemiology review in health research shows understanding deficit of the scope of the problem in health research research. You must get your epidemiological review section right to underscore the causal effects of the problem from different standpoints of measurement, and related influences on designed outcome metrics of choice. Get it right with your incidence and prevalence reporting and related influences based on agreed indicators. Of what use is a research if the scope of the problem is not properly explored using great data sources or fact sheets?

Use of data sources with poor validity may cost you alot in health research. Unlike research in other fields, health research is critical because it is used to policy and drive change related to human lives and patient safety. Health priorities include patient safety at all levels and health-related research must reflect the same in all stages or phases of the research process. It is important to note that when writing your background of study in a health-related research, researchers must explore rich or valid data sources to expand on historical antecedents associated with the disease or health condition of interest.

However, in system-related research the process differs a little. Every organisational antecedents in a given area can be explored. For example, a researcher wants to study why nurses at Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital Kaduna Nigeria are protesting in the past days, the researcher may require a review of the antecedent of that hospital with regards to staff salary to underscore why the problem is existing.

Still, when exploring research problem linked to organisational performance, management, and more, the same principle applies, but this time, researchers do well to identify the problem through a SWOT analysis.

A well structured SWOT analysis exposes evident organisational gaps. This can be systemic, humanistic, or structural. Students who fail to exhaust these aspects of the background section will struggle big time.

- Another aspect of the background of the study is the section where contextualisation is required. There are different contexts to a problem so researchers must explain how they contextualise research problem issuing theoretical models. These models should help readers understand what is being explained in order to clearly offer professional-evidence clarifications to emerging concepts within the problem statement. Here comes the question: How many theories related to the identified concepts in your research do you know? What are the critical assumptions of those theories and how can these assumptions be used to explain or clarify identified concepts? Failure to explore these result in the presentation of a shallow piece of research with many supervisor's red marker.

- As concepts emerge from literature, researchers must explore them in great depth to find what works for you per time.

- Based on identified conceptual gaps, provide a thorough empirical review. This process enhance gap finding. It entails critical analysis of past studies that inform deeper understand of the nature and characterisation of the research gap identified.

Then use suitable conceptual frameworks to model your research work and outputs. This can be a linear model or a more robust one.
Poor conceptual framework destroys the dynamic of research and should be sorted at the beginning of a study. students who fail to use a defined conceptual framework struggle with organisation and structuring of their research output and such characterisation attract low scores. In addition, the problem phenomenon of choice must be clearly explored in the background in a holistic manner to aid easy readership. Share your thoughts in the comments if this adds value to you. May you week be filled with good tidings!

I am Nurse Pat and I use research to guide my understanding of problems we encounter on daily basis.

Attn! Student-supervisor relationship: Excerpt from personal experiences.

Supervisors and students who understand institutional roles and maintain boundaries as per institutional guidelines are more likely to have a good supervision outcome. This understanding ensures that power balance between both parties involved in the supervisory experience is managed effectively in order to minimise exposure to vulnerability.

Because both students and supervisors are vulnerable to abuse when supervision is poorly guided. It is important that students and supervisors in higher education learning centres come to terms with these realities and mitigate against their possible occurrence by following standard academic rules and regulations that apply in given case scenarios.

To excel in an academic research supervision experience, work within defined boundary for your institution, faculty, or department. Have you ever been a made to feel vulnerable during academic-related supervision? If yes, it would be great to read your experience in the comment section, with specific focus on how you manage the situation. Thank you!
