There are seasons where everything that used to hold you up seems to disappear at once. Certainty goes. Relationships change. People leave. Plans collapse. Your identity starts feeling strangely unfamiliar and even the things you once wanted don't hit the same anymore. You look around for the version of yourself who knew what she was doing and she isn't there anymore. And when you're inside it, you don't call it transformation. You call it falling apart. You wonder what you've done wrong. You desperately try to find the quickest route back to the woman you were before everything became so complicated.

Maybe some chapters were never supposed to take us back. Whether the darkness is where we finally meet the parts of ourselves that couldn't survive in the life we were living. The anger. The hunger. The truth. The sexuality. The grief. The voice. The woman underneath all the roles who has absolutely no interest in climbing back out exactly as she went in. Perhaps that's why some journeys feel like a descent rather than an ascent. You don't always find yourself by reaching for more light. Sometimes you have to go fu***ng underground and collect the pieces of yourself you left there.
