The contraceptive implant (Nexplanon) is now licensed for up to 5 years of use in the UK, an increase from the previous 3-year licence.
This change is based on evidence showing that:
- Contraceptive effectiveness is maintained during years 4 and 5.
- No new safety concerns have been identified
This means people using the implant can now rely on it for longer without needing replacement as frequently.
If you currently have the implant, you may not need to have it replaced as early as previously advised.
