Our orchids are spreading 💚

We’re next to Salisbury Plain which is covered in orchids right now but we’ve only ever had two individuals in different places on our land.

Then this year when we checked we only found one and it was snapped off! Imagine how excited we were to find two new plants in other locations! They are all common spotted orchids, no pyramidal ones yet, but it’s a big step forward 🎉💚🌼🌻

Earlier this week Rich went on a one day Wildflowers and Meadow Management course at Castle Hill Country Park in Salisbury.

He spent a day in the chalk downland wildflower meadows learning about plant identification, meadow management and all sorts of really useful supplementary stuff like soil structure.

The course was delivered by Josh and Richard Nature Matters and was FREE thanks to Greenangelslt - part of the the Land Trust group.

Green Angels do a range of courses all around the country. They are all free - simply register online and see what’s on in your area.

It’s always such a joy to host the Wiltshire Spoon Club!

On the third Saturday of each month - it’s free to attend and open to all spoon carvers of any experience. If you fancy joining us then please drop us an email or DM and we will fill you in on the details and add you to the group!

It’s a lovely, low key and very welcoming group of mixed abilities from beginners (like me, Rich!) through to seasoned experts.

Corsham Pound Arts Bluesky Festival!

Yesterday we had a great time with our little stand out in the sunshine and then in the evening a broad ranging gardening/growing/connecting/community panel discussion.

We met so many lovely people and had some really meaningful conversations about the importance of community in our rapidly evolving (not for the better) world. We also got to wear our Wiltshire Small Rewilders hats and talk about the importance of connecting these essential micro projects.

It was fantastic to connect with panel host Orpheus Alexander and fellow guests Kate Four Acre Farm C.I.C and botanist/plant wizard Peter Harper who were the real experts!

Huge thank to Ruth Hill and the team at The Pound for inviting us to be a part of this.

We’re at the Bluesky Festival at Corsham Pound on Sunday 🎉 🌳

We have stand during the day from 11am to 3pm - then we’re on the panel in the evening. Tickets for the evening event are on the Pound website.

🌳Found Outdoors CIC is a rewilding project and outdoor venue set in 54 acres of woodland and fields in the heart of Wiltshire. Rich and Fiona founded it in 2020 with the aim of connecting people and nature for the benefit of both. After a few years, and a huge learning curve, they started the Wiltshire Small Rewilders network in association with Rewilding Britain.

eDNA testing with water team.

A couple of weeks ago we were joined by WWT staff Gemma and Yang, to take water samples for great crested newt (GCN) eDNA testing. This is part of a 4 year scientific study to assess the numbers of GCN in the ponds they created for us.

Background - in 2023 we were delighted to be selected by WWT to have three ponds dug under the district level licensing scheme. This is a government scheme where developers pay money into a pot when projects disturb ecologically sensitive sites, specifically great crested newt habitats. Assuming your site meets the criteria, it’s 100% funded inc planning permission. Different bodies deliver this funding in other counties.

Trail camera fun - deer, rabbit, badger, deer 🌳

Had fun yesterday fixing up the raptor perches in Far Field.

I put them up last year - minus the T shape - but when a herd of cattle had an impromptu holiday in the field they were used as rubbing posts! Now they are back, upright and complete.

Raptor perches provide a place for owls etc to hunt from for small mammals. They are particularly useful in open scrubby grassland that has no trees other than at the edges.
