Here’s a simple one for anyone preparing for Durham City Run Festival: your warm-up does not need to tire you out. It should gradually get your body ready for what it is about to do.

A good warm-up can help increase blood flow, loosen stiff areas and prepare your muscles and joints for running. Think gentle mobility, light jogging and a few short build-ups rather than going straight from standing still to race pace.

As the official physiotherapy partner for Durham City Run Festival, JP Physio will be there across the weekend offering injury advice, movement checks and recovery tips for runners.

Festival runners can also get 10% off physiotherapy with JP Physio. Just mention Durham City Run Festival when you book.

At JP Physio, one of the most common things we hear is that someone hoped the problem would just settle on its own. That is completely understandable. Most people are busy, trying to get on with things and hoping the pain will ease without needing to make a big deal of it.

The difficulty is that the body does not simply stay the same while you wait. It starts to adapt. You might begin moving differently, avoiding certain activities, losing strength or putting more pressure through other areas without even realising it. Over time, what started as one straightforward issue can become more complicated.

That is why earlier support can make such a difference. Getting assessed sooner often means identifying the real problem before those compensations build up and make recovery more drawn out. It is not about overreacting to every ache or pain, but it is about recognising when something is not improving as it should.

At JP Physio, we see this all the time. Someone has pain, mentions it to a few people, does a bit of Googling, and suddenly they have five different explanations and no real clarity.

The tricky part is that a lot of injuries can look and feel very similar on the surface. Knee pain, for example, is not always just about the knee itself. It can be linked to the hips, muscle strength, movement patterns, training load or the way the body is absorbing force during everyday activity or sport.

That is why a proper assessment matters. Rather than guessing based on symptoms alone, we look at how the whole body is moving to work out what is actually driving the problem. Once that is clear, rehab can be much more focused and effective.

Good advice can be helpful, but the right advice is even better.

For some conditions, particularly osteoarthritis and persistent joint inflammation, hands-on physio alone isn’t always enough.

Our clinicians offer a range of injection therapies, including Ostenil®, to help reduce pain, stiffness, and swelling so you can move more comfortably.

If joint pain limits your training or everyday life, we can talk you through your options.

If you like the idea of Pilates but do not want to feel like just another person in a busy class, small group Clinical Pilates can be a really good option.

At JP Physio, our Clinical Pilates sessions are kept small on purpose. That means you still get the motivation and friendly atmosphere of a group session, but with more individual guidance throughout. We can keep an eye on technique, help with adaptations where needed and make sure you are progressing in a way that works for your body.

That balance is often what helps people feel more confident. You are not left to work things out on your own, but you still get the encouragement and consistency that can come from being part of a group. For many people, that supportive environment makes it easier to stick with it and really feel the benefits over time.
