Breathing 🫁

I talk about breathing a lot in my Pilates teaching… it is one of the key fundamentals of classical Pilates.

See below for a paragraph I gained from , which explains the importance of breathing within Pilates and core exercises:

“Breathing is one of the main principles of Pilates and its use is further promoted so that we exhale on the aspect of the movement that requires the greatest effort. This is because the core muscles are activated earlier during expiration, therefore by breathing out on the hardest exertion you will get the greatest engagement from your core muscles (Hodges et al. 1997). This gives local spine stability and support. Exhaling through the mouth provides least resistance and encourages more air excretion than through the narrow nasal passage, giving further ease to the exercise.”

📣 I have been a little quiet recently but have been working on something behind the scenes…

I am now in a position to offer private or semi private (duo) Pilates sessions in a small studio in Newchapel! 😊

I will be providing a mix of Matwork Pilates and reformer Pilates at the studio.

Matwork Pilates holds a lot of value, allowing you to learn and consolidate the basics of classic Pilates. The reformer provides assistance and resistance to use Pilates in a different way.

I can use my Physiotherapy knowledge and experience, combined with my Pilates training and experience to help you recover from surgery, injury, episodes of pain or illness.

If you are interested in a private, or duo Pilates experience then please get in touch 📲

💷 Prices:
Initial 1 hour £50
Follow on sessions 1 hour £50

Other time and price options:
Follow on 45 mins £42
Follow on 30 mins £30

⭐️

My Matwork classes will continue on Wednesdays at Felbridge Village Hall.

Have you ever wondered where Pilates comes from? 🤔…

Pilates was created in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates, a German physical trainer who believed that physical and mental health are deeply connected. During World War I, he developed his method while working with injured soldiers—using springs attached to hospital beds to help them rebuild strength. (Think reformer!)

Originally called “Contrology,” his approach focused on controlled movements, core strength, flexibility, and mindful breathing. (Pilates movements should not be rushed.)

By the 1920s, he brought his method to New York, where it quickly gained popularity among dancers and performers looking to improve strength and prevent injury.
(Pilates can be used for injury prevention as well as rehabilitation following injury or surgery.)

Today, Pilates is practiced worldwide—helping people of all ages build stronger bodies, gain confidence in movement, improve posture, and feel they can move better.
(Pilates is closely related with physiotherapy and a physiotherapists exercise prescription.)
