What are we actually looking at during an OCT scan?
Almost 100% of our patients are now opting for a scan as part of their eye care, but do you know what it allows your optometrist to see?

OCT stands for Optical Coherence Tomography. It creates highly detailed images of the structures at the back of your eye, including the retina and optic nerve.

Think of it a little like being able to see beneath the surface rather than simply looking at it from above. These detailed images can help us detect and monitor subtle changes associated with eye conditions including glaucoma and macular degeneration, sometimes before you’ve noticed any change to your vision.
We can also compare scans over time, helping us identify changes that might otherwise be very difficult to spot.

It’s quick, non-invasive and gives us an extraordinary amount of information about the health of your eyes.

Today at around 7:00pm we are set to see a 90-95% solar eclipse! The next total eclipse is not set to happen until 2090! So it's one not to be missed! (provided the skies are clear enough of course...)

It is very important that you avoid staring directly at the sun as this can lead to irreversible damage to your retina. Instead, why not create a pinhole projector (https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/watch/solar-eclipse-and-how-to-view ).

Why not also take the opportunity to make unforgettable memories with the family and head to the Edinburgh Playfair Observatory on Calton Hill where members of the Astronomical Society of Edinburgh will be on hand to explain more about the eclipse.

Regardless of how you chose to see it, we hope you have the opportunity to take in such a rare astronomical event!

Contact lens care is not to be underestimated!

It pays dividend to properly care for your contacts to avoid the nasties that can have a lasting impact on your eye health and sight.

We recommend sticking to your agreed lens replacement schedule, so having a handy reminder in the phone or diary can help with this.

We strongly encourage an up to date set of specs and an empty case with solutions at the ready on the off chance you need to remove your lenses in a pinch.

In addition you should avoid using your lenses to swim or shower in and not use water to clean or rinse your contacts or their cases.

Minimising risk is at the heart of what we do as we only ever want your eyes to be safe, healthy and for you to enjoy your contacts for as long as you need them.

Pop into practice or contact us today on 0131 552 5160 to book your contact lens fitting or check.
