What has felt easier at school this year than it did last year?
It's such a simple question, but the answer can tell you a lot.

Maybe they're putting their hand up more.
Maybe homework isn't taking quite as long.
Maybe they've made a new friend, settled into a new class or finally started understanding a subject they found difficult last year.
Maybe they're just getting themselves out of the door in the morning with slightly less chaos.

We spend a lot of time noticing where our children need help, particularly once school gets busy.
Half-term is a really good opportunity to notice what's already working too.
Because when a child can recognise their own progress, however small, it gives them something really useful to take back into the next half of term:
Evidence that they're capable of making things better.

Come back to this towards the end of half-term and ask the question.

After more than 20 years supporting students, we know that good academic performance isn't about constantly doing more. It's about recognising what will make the biggest difference now.

Our advanced student workbooks help students develop the confidence, resilience and study skills to understand what they need and work more independently.

You don't need to remember GCSE chemistry or understand their history syllabus to help your child revise.

"Could you explain that more simply?"

When students have to explain something rather than simply recognise it on a page, they quickly discover what they genuinely understand and where the gaps are.

And you don't need to correct them or know whether they're right. Their notes, textbook or mark scheme can do that afterwards.

Your job is simply to make them retrieve and explain what they know.

Twenty minutes of this can tell them far more about their learning than twenty minutes rereading a textbook.

Come back to this the next time your child asks you to test them.

This is something that's surprisingly difficult to spot as a parent.

Your child is getting good grades. Teachers are happy. They're working hard. From the outside, everything looks exactly as it should.

Meanwhile, your child might genuinely feel as though they're constantly falling short- and that's difficult to navigate, because of course you don't want to dampen their ambition.

You just don't want achievement to come at the expense of their confidence or wellbeing either.

The aim isn't to convince them that grades don't matter.
It's helping them develop the confidence, perspective and habits that allow them to pursue ambitious goals without every result becoming a judgement on themselves.

This is a huge part of the work we've done with students over the past 20 years.

Our advanced student workbooks give students practical tools to build those skills alongside their academic work.

With the early UCAS deadline on 15 October, this can be quite a week in some households.

Your child may be rewriting something for the tenth time, worrying about whether everyone else's application is stronger, or suddenly questioning a decision they've been working towards for months - and as a parent, it's hard to know when to help and when to stay out of it.

Three things that genuinely can help:
1. Be the second pair of eyes, not the second applicant.
If they ask you to read something, tell them what's unclear-but let it stay theirs.

2. Help with the boring practical stuff.
Food, lifts, remembering other commitments. Taking one small thing off their plate can be more useful than another conversation about the application.

3. Give them somewhere they don't have to talk about it.
When school, friends and home are all asking about university, switching off becomes surprisingly difficult.

They've got enough people assessing the application.

At home, sometimes the most useful thing you can be is simply their parent.

Come back to this when the application starts taking over the whole house.

If an hour of homework somehow turns into the whole evening, it can be frustrating for everyone.

Before assuming your child needs to concentrate harder, sit nearby for 20 minutes one evening and just notice what happens.

Are they constantly checking what they need to do next?
Getting stuck and staring at the same question?
Switching between tasks?
Picking up their phone every few minutes?
Spending ten minutes trying to make something perfect that only needed two?

Once you know where the time is disappearing, you've got something useful to work with.

A child who can't get started needs different help from one who gets distracted. And both need something different from the child who's spending far too long trying to get everything perfect.

Come back to this the next time homework somehow takes over the whole evening.

You might see:
• More procrastination.
• More frustration.
• Less motivation.
• More "I'll do it later."

It's easy to think they're becoming lazy, but more often they're overwhelmed.

Spotting the difference early is one of the most valuable things a parent can do - come back to this if your child's attitude suddenly changes this term.

When parents think about burnout, they often imagine a child who's completely stopped trying - but in reality, it usually starts much more quietly.

You might notice they're taking longer over homework, getting frustrated more easily, or seeming a little less like themselves. They're not necessarily lazy or losing interest, they may simply be running low on mental energy.

One of the biggest mistakes we see is assuming the answer is to push harder. More often than not, the first step is understanding why your child is struggling before deciding how to help.

After more than 20 years supporting students, we've learned that spotting these small changes early can make a huge difference to confidence, wellbeing and performance.

Our advanced student workbooks are designed to help students build sustainable study habits, confidence and resilience-so they can perform well without constantly feeling overwhelmed.
