Forth Valley First Responders

Forth Valley First Responders Forth Valley First Responders are volunteers trained by The Scottish Ambulance Service to attend 999 emergencies before the arrival of an Ambulance.

The Resuscitation Council (UK) states that a First Responder is “a person, trained as a minimum in basic life support and the use of a defibrillator, who attends a potentially life-threatening emergency.”

A Community First Responder is a local volunteer who agrees to undertake training in Basic Life Support, This then enables them to provide life saving treatment to those people within the community who are critically ill, in the first few minutes prior to the arrival of an ambulance.

🚑💚 Volunteers' Week 2026 💚🚑

This Volunteers' Week, we celebrate the incredible people who choose to give their time, skills, and compassion to help others when they need it most.

Our volunteer emergency first responders are ordinary people doing something extraordinary. They leave family dinners, pause their daily lives, and answer the call to support their communities in times of crisis.

Often first on scene to a medical emergency, they provide vital care, reassurance, and support while help is on the way. But their impact goes far beyond clinical skills — they bring calm, confidence, and hope during some of the most difficult moments in a person's life.

Every response, every hour volunteered, and every patient helped reflects the dedication and selflessness of these remarkable individuals.

To all our volunteer first responders: thank you for everything you do. Your commitment makes a genuine difference to the lives of people across our communities every single day.

💚 Real volunteers. Real impact. Saving lives.

Did you know the charity that supports us, The Friends of Forth Valley First Responders, are responsible for over 100 Public Access Defibrillators across NHS Forth Valley?

There isn’t a week that goes by where multiple of these life saving devices aren’t deployed for use by the Scottish Ambulance Service during a 999 Emergency Call.

The defibrillator pads and batteries are all maintained and replenished by funds from our charity to continue saving lives across the health board and making news stories like this a more common occurrence ❤️

Paul Scott's family performed CPR and used a defibrillator on him while they waited for paramedics to arrive.

Would you spot the signs?

Would you spot the signs?

We’ve attended cardiac arrests where people thought the patient was “just snoring.”
It wasn’t.
This poster shows how to recognise agonal breathing and what to do.
If it doesn’t look or sound right—trust your instincts.

It’s not always possible but when we can we always like to keep our response car, sponsored by Arnold Clark, clean!

This was taken earlier with Kieran and Laura off on the nightshift tonight. It would appear Laura was acting in a supervisory capacity 🤔🚑

Did you know a number of our First Responders provide additional commitment to The Scottish Ambulance Service by responding to the most life threatening of emergency calls when off duty? 🚑

Through the Goodsam Responders App we are setup on a specific staff profile which notifies us of purple coded emergency calls within a 10 kilometre radius 🗺️

This may result in us arriving at the scene of an emergency in civilian clothing as clearly whilst off duty we aren’t in uniform! We will always identify ourselves on arrival ❤️
