💙 Signs of Autism in Girls 💙
Autism can present differently in girls, which is one reason many are identified and diagnosed later than boys.
Girls may develop strategies to hide or “mask” their difficulties, making it harder for others to recognise the challenges they face.
Some common signs may include:
🌸 **Masking**
Girls may copy the behaviour of peers, rehearse social interactions, or work hard to fit in socially, often hiding their true feelings and struggles.
🌸 **Social Exhaustion**
After spending the day navigating social situations, many girls experience significant fatigue, overwhelm, or anxiety once they return home.
🌸 **Intense Interests**
Girls often have strong, focused interests. These interests may appear age-appropriate and therefore attract less attention than more stereotypical autism traits.
🌸 **Internalising Difficulties**
Rather than displaying outward behaviours, girls may experience anxiety, low self-esteem, emotional exhaustion, or feelings of being different.
Why are girls often diagnosed later?
Because many girls learn to mask their challenges, their needs can be overlooked or misunderstood. Increased awareness helps ensure that girls receive the understanding, support, and recognition they deserve.
Every autistic person is unique, and autism presents differently in every individual.
💙 Understanding leads to support.
