We couldn’t fur-get our wonderful Pets As Therapy dogs this Volunteers' Week. 🐾

A huge thank you to all of the Pets As Therapy dogs, and their owners, who visit St Oswald’s Hospice and bring comfort, smiles and plenty of waggy tails. 💙

As part of our Volunteer Thank-a-thon, Sally, who visits with her owner Cath, received her very own thank you call too.

And yes, she absolutely woofed it. 🥰

Watch Sally’s pawsome video and join us in giving all of our Pets As Therapy dogs a big round of ap-paws. 👏

Our volunteers give so much to St Oswald’s Hospice, so this Volunteers' Week we wanted to give something back - a heartfelt thank you. 🙌

Over three days, staff from across the Hospice picked up the phone to make almost 1,000 thank you calls to our volunteers as part of our first Volunteer Thank-a-thon. Where we couldn’t reach someone, we left a message to make sure they still received our thanks 💙

Susan Freeman, Head of Volunteering, said:

“It has been a really lovely way to remind our volunteers just how much they mean to St Oswald’s Hospice.”

To every one of our volunteers, we hope you’ve felt celebrated this Volunteers’ Week. Thank you for everything you do. We simply couldn’t do what we do without you. 🥰

In a little over 3 weeks' time, we'll be holding our Open Gardens event at Blagdon Estate. To help the day run as smoothly as possible, we're looking for some additional volunteers to support the team with a range of tasks and roles 👀

We're also on the look out for a few more volunteer photographers to help us capture the day 📸

Our volunteers are integral to all we do at St Oswald's Hospice so if you're interested in finding out more about supporting us at this event on Sunday, 28th June, we would love to hear from you 💙

“Someone once called me her hero…” 🥰

Peter, one of our Ward Helpers, has been volunteering at St Oswald’s Hospice for over 30 years.

During that time, he’s supported countless patients, families and staff on our Adult Inpatient Unit through simple acts of kindness, whether that’s a warm welcome, a friendly chat, a listening ear, or just being there.

In this short video, Peter shares a moment from his time as a volunteer that has stayed with him ever since, and the personal connection to hospice care that makes his role so meaningful. 💙

This Volunteers' Week, we want to say a huge thank you to Peter and to all of our incredible volunteers. Your time, kindness and care make such a difference every day.

“A few people have told me they will really miss coming to the Hospice when their loved one dies, because they feel like part of the family here. I think that shows how special the Hospice is." 💙

Since joining Main Adult Reception in January, Jennifer has seen first-hand just how much St Oswald’s Hospice means to the people who come through our doors.

At our Gosforth site, she is one of the friendly faces offering a warm welcome to patients, families, staff and volunteers, often at moments that can feel worrying or overwhelming.

Jennifer said: “To be able to offer a little bit of time to the people who want to talk can make a real difference.”

Thank you, Jennifer, for the warmth and kindness you bring to the Hospice. It’s lovely to have you as part of the team. 🥰

Has someone at St Oswald’s Hospice made you feel welcome, supported or cared for?

We'd love to hear. Share a message in the comments below. 👇

Last week, we were so thankful for a very touching delivery of flowers from the family of a patient who recently died at the hospice.

After her funeral, they had so many flowers that they wanted other patients and families to be able to enjoy them too.

Janice (pictured), along with others from our Adult Inpatient team, carefully arranged the flowers into vases and displays, then placed them around the hospice – bringing colour, comfort and a little brightness to every corner 🌺

It was a beautiful act of kindness, and we’re so grateful to the family for thinking of others at such a difficult time 💙

Happy 20th anniversary to our wonderful Clown Doctors NE! 🎉

The Clown Doctors have been visiting our Children and Young Adults Service for 20 fabulous years, entertaining our young people, staff and volunteers with songs, music, bubbles, balloons, magic tricks and more 💙

One of our Children and Young Adults Service families told us:

“My daughter absolutely loves the Clown Doctors. They bring her so much enjoyment. Thank you St Oswald’s Hospice for being able to provide this for all the children.”

A huge thank you to the Clown Doctors for everything you do, and congratulations on 20 amazing years of spreading smiles. 🥰

Poppy can’t come to the phone right now…she’s kinda busy. 🐾📞

Busy spreading pawsitive vibes. Busy soaking up cuddles. Busy making Fridays that little bit brighter for patients, families, staff and volunteers at St Oswald’s Hospice. 💙

Every Friday afternoon, Pets As Therapy dog Poppy and her owner Cee visit the Hospice, bringing smiles, comfort and plenty of waggy-tailed joy along the way. 🐶

Cee said:

“Bringing smiles and joy to patients, their families and the staff makes every visit worthwhile. It gives me a huge amount of perspective and has undoubtedly made me approach life very differently since becoming a volunteer.

“I’m beyond grateful that patients and families so generously accept me and Poppy into their lives each Friday afternoon. I never stop enjoying meeting new faces, and revisiting those who stay a little longer. Poppy loves the fuss and attention, and everyone benefits!”

A huge thank you to Cee and Poppy for the comfort, joy and very important cuddles they bring to the Hospice each week. 🥰
