That's where our in-house design team comes in.

Working alongside our customers and production teams, they look at the bigger picture. How will the packaging work on the packing line? Will it protect the product? Can the design be smarter, more practical or make better use of materials?

Having that expertise in-house means ideas can be explored, tested and refined with the people who understand packaging inside out.

Ever wondered what happens to a cardboard box once it’s been unpacked?

Here’s how the life cycle works:
1. From raw materials – Paper fibres are sourced to create the material used in corrugated cardboard.

2. Made for purpose – Those materials are turned into corrugated board, designed, printed and manufactured into boxes that protect products during storage and transport.

3. Packed and delivered – The box gets to work, keeping goods safe as they make their journey to their destination.

4. Collected and recycled – Once its job is done, the cardboard can be collected, sorted and sent for recycling.

5. Back into the cycle – The recovered fibres can be used to manufacture new paper and cardboard products, helping reduce the need for virgin materials.

And the cycle starts again.

The takeaway? Recycling matters, but so does designing the right packaging, using materials efficiently and making sure boxes are disposed of responsibly.

Supporting local talent, on and off the pitch. ⚽

At Challenge Packaging, supporting our local community is something we’re proud of. Today, we’re shining a spotlight on Martha, the daughter of our Finance Director, who is taking the next step in her football journey.

Martha started playing grassroots football at just nine years old with Horam and Heathfield Girls, progressing through the age groups from 7-a-side to 11-a-side. When her under-16s team folded at the end of last season, she was determined to keep playing and joined Link FC Women over the summer.

Now competing in the Sussex County Women’s Football League at just 16, Martha is taking on the challenge of playing against experienced adult players. Link FC Women have made an excellent start to the season, winning their last three games through teamwork, commitment and hard work.

We’re proud to sponsor Martha on this next stage of her football journey, having previously supported her team at Horam and Heathfield, too.

As a local business based in Hailsham, we believe young people should have the opportunity to pursue their passions. Supporting Martha is a great example of how we can help young local talent continue doing what they love.

👋 Meet Casey Ham, our new Business Manager at Challenge Packaging

Next up in our Meet the Team series is Casey Ham.

Casey looks after our existing customers while also building new relationships and opportunities, with one thing always at the heart of what he does: getting it right for the customer.

With a background in plastic packaging, Casey has worked as an Area Sales Manager for both a reseller and a manufacturer. That experience gives him a great understanding of the industry from both sides and, more importantly, what businesses really need when choosing the right packaging solution.

And when he’s not looking after our customers, Casey is a proud dad of two, so life outside Challenge is certainly no quieter!

We’re looking forward to sharing more from Casey and the rest of the Challenge team as part of our Meet the Team series.

With more than three decades of experience across the print and packaging industry, Mark brings a wealth of knowledge to Challenge, and we’re looking forward to giving you the chance to get to know him and his role within the business.

📦 Single wall or double wall, which one do you need?

Not all cardboard boxes are created equal.
When it comes to choosing the right box, one of the biggest things to consider is the board grade, and specifically whether you need single-walled or double-walled corrugated board.

Single-walled boxes have one fluted layer between two liners. They’re lighter, more cost-effective and a great option for everyday items that don’t require heavy-duty protection.

Double-walled boxes have two fluted layers, giving them additional strength, cushioning and resistance to crushing. They’re better suited to heavier, fragile or higher-value products, particularly when they’re travelling longer distances.

So, which should you choose?
📦 Single wall: clothing, books, smaller household items and lighter, non-fragile products.

📦 Double wall: electronics, machinery, glassware, heavier products and items that need a little more protection during transit.

The right board grade can make a big difference to how your packaging performs, so it’s worth considering what’s going inside the box, how far it’s travelling and what it’s likely to face along the way.
