Penalised again

Beauty salons have been left out of the Government’s new 20% business rates cut for pubs, social clubs and live music venues in England.

The targeted relief is due to begin in April 2027 and is expected to benefit nearly 32,000 eligible venues, with the typical pub estimated to save around £1,100 in the next financial year.

Beauty salons, hairdressers, barbershops and aesthetics clinics are not included in the new sector-specific discount, although some businesses may still qualify for existing forms of business rates relief.

The announcement comes just days after the National Hair & Beauty Federation called on Prime Minister Andy Burnham to include personal care businesses in wider business rates and VAT reform.

The NHBF says salons and other personal care businesses support local jobs, apprenticeships and high street footfall, while facing growing pressure from rent, wages, energy costs, VAT and business rates.
