Let's talk Direct Cremations.

You can't turn on the television or radio at the moment without hearing adverts about it. Many of these adverts focus on saving money, avoiding fuss, and taking the burden away from loved ones.

And for some people, direct cremation may be exactly the right choice, but it's important to understand what direct cremation actually means.

A direct cremation is simply a cremation without a funeral service beforehand. It doesn't mean families can't gather, remember, celebrate a life, or say goodbye. What worries us is when audiences are led to believe that the cheapest option is automatically the kindest option.

Grief isn't something to be rushed.

For many people, having a space to come together, share stories, support one another, and acknowledge a death is an important part of the grieving process. That goodbye might happen in a crematorium, a place of worship, a favourite pub, the back garden, or somewhere completely unique to your person. It might happen before a cremation or after one.

What matters is choice and you being informed of all the options available to you. A direct cremation can be part of a meaningful farewell. It shouldn't replace one.

What are your thoughts? Do you think we, as a society, are placing enough value on the importance of saying goodbye?

We are really proud to be extending our memorial services across Liverpool City Region and giving the people of Sefton Council the opportunity to remember loved ones on significant days like Father's Day.

If you would like your loved one's name to be read out during the service of remembrance, please comment below or drop us a message 💚

Thornton Garden of Rest would like to welcome one and all to join them for a Father’s Day event on Sunday 21 June.

A memorial service will be held at 1pm to pay special tribute to beloved fathers or father figures that are no longer with us.

Please feel welcome to visit between 12pm and 2pm for the event, or at any time during Thornton Garden of Rest’s opening hours (dawn until 8:30pm) if you would like to pay your respects in your own way.

One of the kindest things you can do for your family and friends is to talk about your last wishes before it’s needed.

Not because it’s morbid but because it can bring clarity, comfort, and remove uncertainty during incredibly difficult times.

And those conversations don’t only have to be about what you do want — they can also include the things you don’t want to happen as that is equally important.

Simple things like:
🎶 music you love (or really don’t want played)
🪦⚱️burial or cremation preferences
📖 readings, poems, or traditions that matter to you
👥 who you’d want involved
💚 what kind of atmosphere feels right
🫂 what matters most to you
⚰️anything that wouldn’t feel like “you”

These conversations might feel difficult or uncomfortable to start with, but they often bring surprising peace of mind for everyone involved.

Have you ever discussed your wishes — or worries — with loved ones?
