August 30th is Grief Awareness Day. Grief can show up in ways that aren’t always obvious - anger, numbness, difficulty concentrating at school or work. At YPAS, we support children, young people and families who are mental health and wellbeing challenges in all its forms. There’s no right way to grieve, and there’s no timeline. Our counsellors offer a steady, confidential space where young people can talk, or not talk, at their own pace. Reach out to us or someone you trust - support is here when you’re ready

🎒 Back to school can bring BIG feelings, but our Peer Researcher Rachel has put together a handy guide to help you through it.

For some children and young people, the return to school after the holidays can feel exciting. For others, it can bring worry, anxiety, overwhelm, or uncertainty.

A change in routine can be difficult and sometimes those feelings can show up as tears, irritability, tummy aches, difficulty sleeping or not wanting to go to school.

💛 If your child is struggling, remember:

✨ Their feelings are valid.
✨ They’re not being “difficult.
✨ They don’t have to feel ready all at once.
✨ Small, predictable steps can make a big difference.
✨ Listening and letting them know you’re there can help them feel safe and supported.

Try swapping “Don’t worry, you’ll be fine” for:
“I can see this feels difficult. I’m here with you, and we can take it one step at a time.”

Starting a new school year can be a big transition. Be kind, be patient, and remember that every child and young person will adjust in their own time.

If your child or young person is struggling with their wellbeing, support is available.

Ever wondered why your heart races before a presentation or your mouth goes dry when you're nervous? That's your body's Fight or Flight Response kicking in - and it's actually trying to protect you!

Our Peer Researcher Jasmyn has created this video breaking down:
🧠 What's happening in your brain
❤️ Why your body changes when you're anxious
🌿 Simple techniques to help you calm down

Remember: what you're feeling is real and valid. Your brain is just trying to look out for you - even if the "threat" is just a deadline or a tricky conversation.
