As parents, it’s natural to think that if a young athlete gets injured, the solution is to see a physio—and if they do get injured, I’m here for injury assessment and rehabilitation 👋

But injury prevention starts long before an athlete walks into a clinic ⚠️

Many sports injuries occur when the demands placed on a young athlete exceed their ability to cope with them. Training load, strength, movement quality, recovery, sleep, and growth all play a role.

That’s why athletic development is so important ❗️

Teaching young athletes how to move well, build strength, recover properly, and understand their bodies helps them become more resilient and better prepared for the demands of sport. “Are they not a bit young for that?”

When people hear “athletic development,” they often picture intense training, elite sport, or children being pushed too hard too young.

But that’s not what it should be about.
Athletic development is simply helping young people learn how to move well, build confidence in their bodies, and enjoy being active.

Running, jumping, landing, changing direction, balancing, throwing, lifting, playing — these are all fundamental movement skills that benefit every child, whether they play sport competitively or not.

We encourage children to learn maths, languages, music and other life skills from a young age. Why should physical literacy be any different?

There is already some fantastic work being done in this space, with more coaches, therapists and organisations recognising the importance of helping children develop movement skills from a young age.

WHY DOES BACK PAIN KEEP COMING BACK? 🤔

Performance and back pain are more connected than people think…

One of the biggest mistakes people make is thinking:
“the pain has gone, so the problem is fixed.”
But pain relief and recovery are NOT the same thing.

Often the pain settles before the body has properly rebuilt:
✔ strength
✔ movement confidence
✔ flexibility
✔ load tolerance
✔ resilience

That’s why so many people go through the same cycle:
➡ pain flares up
➡ rest/stretch/massage
➡ pain eases
➡ back to normal activity
➡ pain returns again

Recurring back pain is often linked to:
• weakness or deconditioning
• reduced movement from sitting or inactivity
• poor recovery and stress
• avoiding bending/lifting through fear
• sudden spikes in activity
• rehab stopping too early

Great to spend yesterday evening with NHSOB u15s 🏉 introducing the players to performance screening through grip strength testing using the VALD system.

I’m offering sessions like this to local clubs as a way of supporting teams and helping players access tools that are often only available in professional environments.

We also added a bit of competition into the session, with the top score earning a free athletic development session. It was a good way to get the players engaged while still collecting useful baseline data.

Thanks to the players and coaches for getting involved 💪
