☀️ Hot weather and heart health ☀️
The current heatwave can place extra strain on the body, particularly for people living with heart disease, heart failure, arrhythmias, or those recovering from cardiac surgery.
When it’s hot, your heart works harder to regulate body temperature, and dehydration can occur more quickly. Your blood pressure may be lower than normal and your heart rate higher as your body works hard to cool you down.
To stay safe this week:
💧 Drink fluids regularly (if you’re on a fluid restriction, ask your medical team whether you can increase this during the heatwave)
🚶♀️ Exercise during cooler parts of the day (or perhaps get a day pass for the gym so you can walk/exercise in air conditioning)
🧢 Wear light clothing, a hat and seek shade where possible if you do go out for a walk
😌 Slow down and listen to your body, take it a lot easier this week
⚠️ Stop and seek advice if you experience chest pain, dizziness, palpitations, or unusual breathlessness
Remember: it’s perfectly okay to modify your exercise routine during a heatwave. Consistency is important, but safety comes first.
