What a busy day at the Thames Ditton regatta yesterday, sat 16th May. Both safety boats had multiple rescues. I think the worst medical case for the medics was from someone falling out of a tree. From our side there were many ores broken, we do tell them not to go too close to the trees. Some listen, others do not. Very early start of racing at 8am, and finished at around 6pm. That's a long day for us in the sunshine. My dermatologist will be pleased to see me again. Until the next event, oh that's tomorrow, maidenhead juniors.

Not a good day for safety today. We are at Wraysbury Skiff club in Runneymede today for their long distance event. We launched the safety boat, i then took the trailer out of the water. I went back to check that all was okay, it was not, the steering rod had snapped. I informed the club of the issue, luckily they have a small tin boat the crew could use for the safety duty. Meanwhile I have taken the boat to Bates Wharf in Chertsey. Good place to go if you need your boat fixed. No idea of the cost of the repair to the steering. I will probably need to be sitting down as I have asked how much hydraulic steering will cost as apposed to cable. These things happen when you have boats.

Today's Head of The River Race, 375 boats out today. Went well with only a few incidents of clearing logs in the river. It got cold and wet in the afternoon. If I had some storage I could have kept the hail stones to make ice cubes for the drinks at The Ship Pub, chiswick after we finished. Let's hope that tomorrow's event it is warmer than today.

Friday 13th , was that a good day to hold a schools rowing event, yes it was. 316 boats in the event only a few issues. The competitors did really well considering the cold and sometimes windy conditions. For the odd boat, duck tape saved the day. Roll on Schools Head of River Race next year.

January Update
So far this year it has not been a good start to the safety boat season, all 3 events were cancelled. Two of the events were on the environment agency stretch of the River Thames and the other was on the Port of London section of the river. Environment agency section of the river went to Red boards a week before the event, whilst the port of London went Yellow flag a few days before the event.
If you now look up the environment agency "River Thames: current river conditions" you will see that every stretch of the river, i.e. between the locks has the status of "Red caution: strong stream". On the Port of London website, currently the status is "Red Flag", you don't see this too often.
Let's hope that February is better, don't hold your breath.

It's been a busy last 3 days with providing safety coverage at rowing events. Today was the Veterans 4's Head Race. 375 boats rowing from chiswick to putney, the Oxford Cambridge boat race course. Luckily only 1 casualty that i know of, someone who was very cold.
Next event in a few weekends time, weather permitting. With the amount of rain we have had so far, part of the environment agency waters are on yellow and some on red boards. Red boards, no one is going out.
