As part of the celebrations for the 30th anniversary of our Tickled Pink breast cancer charity campaign Sam is taking on a "triple no ni**le challenge" to raise awareness and inspire people to check themselves.

At 19, Sam was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma and underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy to her chest. While the treatment saved her life, radiotherapy increased their risk of developing breast cancer later in life. She underwent a risk reduction double mastectomy in April 2025 and says that for her, it was the right decision. Now 32, she has tackled the London Marathon, Chase the Sun, a 205-mile cycle ride between sunrise and sunset, and a two-mile Swim Serpentine challenge in London – raising money for our charity partner CoppaFeel!. Sam took on all of her three challenges topless to start conversations, challenge perceptions and show that her body is strong and valid.

She said: "It's liberating! I'm doing them all topless to show off the scars. I want people to be able to advocate for themselves, go to the GP and, seeing my chest, think, 'I should probably check my chest, there's a bit of a lump, go get it checked out. I don't want to get scars like that.' I think it's beautiful, this survivor's body I live in and I'm really proud of it. But I know there'll be some people that feel differently, they might see that and go "I should get that little lump checked" and that's what I'm doing. I've lived through all that rubbish so that I can try and turn it into something good. I wanted to do something bold and brave and give people an opportunity to see it."

Sam also has a message for Asda customers: "Happy 30th birthday to Tickled Pink. What you guys have been doing over the years is amazing. I've been seeing that messaging since I was a kid and you know when Asda turns pink everybody knows about it. It's such a great platform to raise that awareness and raise that message and get people checking their chests and advocating for themselves and raising money for vital things like Breast Cancer Now and everything they do and CoppaFeel! and everything they do. So thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!"

"Being a man and hearing the words 'you've got breast cancer' is a proper, proper shock" – the words of Asda customer Darren, who's a big advocate for our Tickled Pink campaign.

Darren is a regular at our Cannock store's Tickled Pink events raising money and awareness for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel!. He's always happy to chat to customers and colleagues about his experience and offer advice to anyone who needs it. He was diagnosed with grade two invasive ductal cancer in June 2023 after his wife Fiona felt a lump in his chest when he was lying down. She is registered blind and has a heightened sense of touch.

Darren said: "It was just a massive shock. I'd heard of men getting breast cancer, but hadn't really taken it in. It's something like 55,000 woman a year in the UK get breast cancer, for men it's less than 400. It is rare, but it does happen. I think in a way I've been really lucky as from finding my lump to my op it was only six weeks. I am one of the very lucky few who haven't had to have chemotherapy or radiotherapy, I'm just on Tamoxifen for five years."

Asda Cannock community champion Sue said: "It's great having Darren at our events, where he's able to give a male perspective on breast cancer. It really brings it home that breast cancer doesn't discriminate, both men and women can get it."

"Breast friends" Julie, Helen and Pauline from Asda Thornaby are at the heart of the store’s Tickled Pink activity as it celebrates its 30th anniversary. 🎀

They've all had breast cancer and, after recovering well, are using their own experiences to help customers and colleagues recognise the signs and symptoms of breast cancer – raising tens of thousands of pounds for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel! in the process. 💗

Helen said: "Tickled Pink is amazing and I feel proud to be involved. For me it's all about community spirit and raising awareness and it's come such a long way in 30 years. I hope in the future that everyone will be able to survive breast cancer. Early diagnosis is the key and that's what Tickled Pink is all about.

💗 This year, Sam took on running, cycling and swimming challenges to help raise awareness for CoppaFeel!

After being diagnosed with cancer at 19 and later undergoing a double mastectomy, Sam chose to celebrate her body and encourage others to know their normal.

We're honoured that Sam shared her story as part of Tickled Pink.💕

The Tickled Pink awareness posters displayed in our St Leonards-on-Sea store played a huge part in our colleague Donna's decision to check herself – and when she did she found a small lump in her breast which turned out to be cancerous.

Seeing those reminders every day helped her to recognise what to look out for and encouraged her to take action. In August last year Donna, who's 46, found a tiny lump, less than a centimetre, just under her ni**le. At first, she thought it might be a harmless cyst, something that would disappear on its own, but after a few days it remained so, with a gentle nudge from her partner, John, she made the decision to visit her GP. A mammogram and biopsies were carried out, and within three weeks she found out she had Stage 1 breast cancer. In October, she underwent a full mastectomy, along with the removal of four lymph nodes under her arm, and then started chemotherapy. She's since made a great recovery and has returned to work.

Donna said: "My mum had breast cancer at about the same age as me so I was kind of aware, but I'm one those people who think everything's okay and never go to a doctor. I see all the Tickled Pink stuff at work every day. The posters are everywhere, even the toilets. You can't miss them. Their message worked as it made me very aware, and so I thought I'd better check myself. I'd like to think that a lot of our customers are seeing the messages too and checking themselves. The earlier you catch things, the easier it is to deal with it. Thankfully I caught mine early, so it was relatively easy to get rid of.

"Tickled Pink is a great charity and it's brilliant in raising awareness. I've always supported Tickled Pink in the store and worn the T shirts, we all do here. Our community champion Wendy always makes sure we are up for it."

We kicked off Tickled Pink weekend at Charlton with the arrival of our pink trolleys.

They come with a message, research shows that chest checking in our area is not as good as we'd like it to be, the trollies come with a QR code where you can pledge to check your chests.

We have a table located in the foyer, with leaflets and descriptive cards that will show you how you should be checking your chests!

We also held the first of our weekend fundraisers which was a huge success, raising just over £1000! Tyler our regular volunteer was back bringing all the pink vibes - Maisie finished her early morning shift on bakery then come to support the table, while lots of our colleagues will be wearing pink for the month to show their support.

Thank you to everyone who comes to get involved, be it sharing their personal stories, donating or playing our games - we couldn't do any of it without you 💗

Look out for these pink trolleys with an important message..

The trolleys feature chest-checking guidance and QR codes linking customer to information from charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel! as well as our online “Pledge-o-Meter”, where customers can commit to checking regularly.

New research has found that 35 per cent of people surveyed in London said they'd never checked their chest or established a regular checking routine.

As well as the trolleys, our store will be selling lots of Tickled Pink products throughout October - Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

It's the 30th anniversary of Tickled Pink this year. To date, over £100 million in funds have been raised for world-class research, vital education and life-changing support - delivered by our charity partners.

I was joined by Asda Belvedere community champion Kuia for a fantastic community picnic which was held at Mycenae Gardens. We gave out lots of our Cbeebies Holiday Activity Packs which were a big hit with the families attending - one of our creative guests did her own doodling using just a black pencil👌

We had bubbles, sunglasses, a variety of creative activities and a snack table to keep guests coming back for more! We neighboured with Quaggy Children's Services and made new connections to widen our community network. Huge thanks to Amy from Charlton Athletic Community Trust for inviting us along to a fabulous fun free event for our community 💚

Our longest serving colleagues had the opportunity to go to Sandown Racecourse to celebrate and thank them for their years of great service.

We have Suleiman (nights) and Inderjit (Team leader checkouts) celebrating 25 years service while Althea (Team leader chilled) and Leigh (chilled) are celebrating 30 years of service at Asda. We also have to give Mark (produce) a shoutout for his 25 years of service as he wasn't able to make the day.

Well done Denise. Wonderful to see so how much your kindness means to so many people. 💚

When a customer at our Charlton store who realised she'd forgotten her purse was about to head home so she could come back and pay for her shopping our colleague Denise stepped in to pay for it herself.

Denise said: "She only had a few bits, and it came to about £8. I don't normally have my card with me on the shop floor but I'd just had a break and it was in my pocket so I tapped it and paid for her. She was very, very grateful. It was a boiling hot day and I didn't want her to rush back home in the heat. She came in the next day and tried to give me the money back but I said 'no that's my good deed of the day.'"

Karlee, the store's community champion, said: "The customer said the level of customer service she received had made her whole week. Fab job at spreading kindness, Denise." Denise has been rewarded through Asda's internal recognition scheme to cover the cost of the shopping plus a little extra to thank her for her kindness.

Angela from our Charlton store is backing England to go all the way in the football this summer .... but she'll be rooting for her nephew Antoine Semenyo when he takes to the pitch tonight for Ghana against Harry Kane and co.

Angela said: "We are all so proud of Antoine, he's a brilliant footballer. We all support him and have always encouraged him. He could have played for England, but Ghana called on him first! I think Ghana will win tonight – 1-0, hopefully with Antoine scoring. Although I hope Ghana win tonight I do think England will go on and win the tournament. But, you know, it's just a game, it's a bit of fun and we are having a lot of fun in store with the football."

Asda Charlton's community champion Karlee said: "It's always fun in store when we have a football tournament on the go. Everyone is allowed to wear their chosen country's football tops. We have such a variety of colleagues from different nationalities supporting their teams. It's great to see everyone back their home teams and wear their tops with pride, but I'll be shouting 'Come on England!'"

Michelle from the neonatal unit at Queen Elizabeth Hospital reached out to see if we could support their upcoming cake sale fundraiser.

After having a neonatal baby myself, I know all the extra expenses you incur at an already stressful time. Not only are these nurses helping the most vulnerable babies, they are holding fundraisers to support new mums on their neonatal journeys. All funds raised from this event will go to their charity - Ickle Pickles.

The bake sale will be held on Thursday 25th June at the hospital 💚.

Mrs Leggat of Southrise Primary School was pleased to receive our donation of a movie hamper and some soft toys which will be used in their upcoming summer fair.

These events really are vital to the school communities which help them raise much needed funds for things such as breakfast clubs and extra activities.
