What happens when an MCL injury doesn’t heal quite as expected?

In this video, Chris Myers from Complete Physio uses diagnostic ultrasound to assess the Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) alongside a Pellegrini-Stieda lesion - a post-traumatic calcification that can develop after an avulsion injury at the ligament’s attachment on the medial femoral condyle.

Often referred to as a Pellegrini-Stieda fracture or Stieda fracture, this type of injury occurs when a small piece of bone is pulled away at the MCL origin.

If healing is incomplete, calcification or ossification can remain within the ligament tissue.

Ultrasound imaging allows us to assess ligament structure, healing response and associated calcification dynamically in clinic, helping to guide accurate diagnosis, rehabilitation and return-to-sport planning.

What does a fibula look like on ultrasound after ORIF removal?

In this video, Chris Myers from Complete Physio talks through an ultrasound scan of a patient who sustained a significant fibular fracture requiring ORIF surgery with a plate and 9 screws.

Following removal of the metalwork, ultrasound gives a fascinating insight into the healing bone and surrounding soft tissue changes.

Chris explains what can be visualised on diagnostic ultrasound, including the cortical irregularity left behind from the previous fixation, post-surgical changes and how imaging can help assess healing and ongoing symptoms following major ankle injury and surgery.

Diagnostic ultrasound is an excellent tool for dynamic assessment of musculoskeletal injuries, particularly when monitoring recovery after trauma or orthopaedic procedures.

Base of thumb osteoarthritis is one of the most common causes of hand pain - especially when gripping, pinching or opening jars 👍

The joint at the base of the thumb (the CMC joint) works hard every day, allowing a huge range of movement. Over time, the cartilage can wear down, leading to pain, stiffness and weakness.

Common symptoms include:

▫️ Weakness opening jars or turning keys
▫️ Swelling or tenderness
▫️ A grinding or clicking sensation
