Alongside the 128 sessions put together by the working party, UKIO delegates also benefited from the Education on the stands programme - short ‘bite-size’ lectures, demonstrations and presentations run from our sponsors' and exhibitors' stands. There were 115 sessions in total - offering valuable additional content and education.

Dr Sami Khan received the inaugural Presidents’ Medal for Outstanding Contribution to Imaging or Oncology at UKIO in Liverpool last week. Part of the UKIO Presidents' Awards, the Medal is awarded to an exceptional individual who has dedicated their career to improving patient outcomes while making a lasting impact on colleagues, services, and the wider profession.

🏆 Dr Khan has devoted decades of his life to advancing radiology education and improving patient care through teaching that has reached thousands of learners worldwide. His platform, Dr Khan's Teaching (DKT), has delivered more than 1,165 hours of teaching to over 165,000 students across 130 countries. Remarkably, he has provided this extensive education free of charge, demonstrating exceptional commitment to equitable access to knowledge. Dr Khan’s influence extends beyond exam preparation, his teaching shapes clinical practice globally. Few radiologists of his generation have influenced education, clinical practice, and ultimately patient outcomes so selflessly on such a remarkable international scale.

At the UKIO Presidents' Awards last week, Chris Taylor was awarded Industry Leader of the Year - celebrating an individual from industry who demonstrates outstanding leadership and commitment to improving patient outcomes through value-driven collaboration.

The winner of the Innovator of the Year Award at last week's UKIO Presidents' Awards was David McKean. The award recognises individuals or teams who have successfully implemented digital health or technological solutions that improve patient outcomes, operational efficiency, or staff wellbeing within imaging or oncology departments.

🏆 David is a leading MSK Spine Interventional Radiologist and performed the first cases in the UK of electro chemotherapy for radioresistant epidural metastatic disease and of basivertebral nerve ablation, both with excellent outcomes. He was also the first person outside the US to perform basivertebral nerve ablation using the intracept device. In addition to this, he regularly performs tumour ablation and cement augmentation procedures in the spine and continues to drive the adoption of new, minimally invasive techniques in his Trust, such as ultrasound guided biceps tenotomy and other MSK intervention techniques.

Our next winner at the UKIO Presidents' Awards last week was Rob Chuter - winning the Sustainability Initiative of the Year Award - for an individual or team that has led an impactful sustainability initiative aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of healthcare delivery within imaging or oncology services.

🏆 Rob has demonstrated outstanding leadership through the development of the Green Radiotherapy Framework (gRTF), an initiative that provides a practical, evidence-based pathway for radiotherapy professionals to reduce the carbon footprint of services across the UK. By introducing a structured award scheme, the gRTF drives measurable, sustained environmental improvements within departments. Grounded in national survey data and research, it ensures both relevance and impact. The framework not only standardises sustainable practice but actively motivates continuous progress, representing a significant step forward in embedding environmental responsibility within radiotherapy services nationwide.

UKIO 2026 featured the inaugural UKIO Presidents' Awards, which were designed to recognise exceptional contributions to patient care, innovation, education, sustainability, and leadership within our community. We were thrilled at the response to this initiative and the large number of nominations received and the panel had the difficult task of assessing the nominations and selecting the award winners.

The awards were presented in the final plenary session at UKIO in Liverpool last week.

🏆 Our first winner - receiving the Educator of the Year Award for an individual or team that has delivered sustained, high-quality and impactful teaching or training that has significantly supported professional development in imaging or oncology - was Melanie Clarkson. Melanie has led nationally significant innovation in non-surgical oncology education and workforce development. She authored the first globally recognised advanced practise area-specific framework for the multi-professional non-surgical oncology workforce, endorsed by NHS England, Macmillan and the Society of Radiographers, now underpinning a new MSc launching in September 2026. In addition, she contributed to the diagnostic enhanced practice framework, and her work is transforming career pathways, strengthening workforce capability and improving patient care across oncology services.
