Tour de France Insights with Dr. Sam Impey (.live)
The Tour de France wrapped up a few weeks ago, and there’s still plenty to unpack.

Riders were fuelling four-hour-plus stages back to back for three weeks, squeezing recovery into short windows between stages and managing fatigue with barely a rest day in the whole race. The energetic cost of that is enormous, and it’s worth understanding properly.

We’re covering all of it in a WEBINAR: Tour de France Insights, 20th August, 8pm BST.

I will break down the fuelling, recovery, and energetic demands behind the race from a practitioner’s view. Joining him is Dr Sam Impey () from .live sharing the inside view of pro cycling nutrition.

Useful whether you’re working with athletes, studying nutrition, or just curious about how the pros manage it.

Do I sleep better away from my kids?

I analysed 303 nights of my own Garmin data including 113 nights in England Rugby camps to find out.

The headline: camp barely moves my sleep duration.

What actually shifts is REM and sleep stress and not in the direction you’d expect.

Full breakdown in the carousel 👉

What affects YOUR sleep more…kids, travel, work stress, training, or lifestyle? Genuinely curious.

Data: personal Garmin export, 303 nights, Aug 2025–Aug 2026. Wearable sleep staging, not polysomnography — N=1, directional only.

The numbers don’t lie, but they don’t tell the whole story either.

74.8 kg after the 6 Nations. Down to 71.4 on the London Marathon start line. Back up on summer tour. Then the cut starts again.

This is what a year of performance weight management actually looks like. Not linear. Not perfect. Periodised.

I track my own weight the same way I’d track an athlete’s. Morning readings only. No panic at the peaks. Trust the process on the way down.

Currently 71.5 kg. Half marathon on 3rd October. Target: 70 kg.

The graph is honest. So am I.

When in camp, the food is amazing, my volume of eating goes up, so does my weight! I’m not eating rubbish, im just eating more food!

The lesson for me moving forward it to change the plate to a bowl, walk away when the desserts are out for the players and have a little more discipline

Many athletes still get match day fuelling wrong!

You don’t want a heavy stomach or that feeling of bloating going into peak performance

The large carb loads should be done the day before

The day of competition we are TOPPING up the tank, mainly liver glycogen

Across rugby league, rugby union, football and boxing all the athletes I have worked with tell me the same thing

I want to go into the game full of energy but with a light stomach

I’ve personally seen some great outcomes with players focusing more on liquid carbohydrates over solids.

The video is an example of how easy it is to get 80g of carbs in from gels rather than potato

Whats your favourite way to fuel on match day?

This reframe has worked very well for me in pro sport

Game day or event day is unique

Demands are through the roof, but just the physical event but the cognitive load, the physiological state, the adrenaline the nerves

It all places an energetic cost on the body which requires elite level fuelling

Don’t just fuel the event, fuel the day!
