🐍 ADDER ALERT! 🐍

With all this warm weather, please be mindful of adders!

As temperatures rise, adders become more active—especially in heathland, moorland, and coastal areas around Cornwall.

While bites are rare, they can be serious for pets, particularly curious dogs.

⚠️ Keep an eye out for:
• Sudden yelping or signs of pain
• Swelling (often to the face or limbs)
• Lethargy or weakness

⏱️ If you suspect a bite:
• Keep your pet calm and as still as possible
• Carry them if you can
• Contact your vet immediately

💉 We stock antivenom on site, so prompt treatment can be given if needed—quick action makes all the difference.

Even during early morning or evening walks, adders can be out and about so please be cautious! 🐾

It’s World Blood Donor day🩸🌍

Some of you may be aware that Penmellyn/Cornwall Veterinary Referrals are a local blood bank, stocking canine blood for the use in our patients and other practices across Cornwall.

Due to the high use of our blood bank, we have decided to double our stock levels to make sure we can help as many pets needing blood transfusions as possible❤️

If your practice requires blood products you can give us a call on 01637 880307 and we can supply blood products as needed.

Did you know that there is now evidence to suggest that a traditional spay may not be the best option for Golden Retrievers? 💛

This is Sophie, who visited us recently for neutering. After discussing the options with her family, Christian, our RCVS Advanced practitioner in small animal surgery performed an ovarian sparing spay (OSS). This is a procedure that he has extensive experience of and would be happy to discuss with anyone with a golden retriever.

Current research suggests that removal of the ovaries (and thus removing the hormones they produce) can be associated with an increased risk of certain cancers, risks of orthopaedic disease and urinary incontinence. An OSS prevents pregnancy, bleeding during heat and pyometra but allows dogs like Sophie to maintain the benefits of oestrogen production.🐾

An o***y sparing spay is not the right choice for everyone, but should be considered in Golden Retrievers. We are always happy to discuss the pros and cons of all neutering options so owners can make the best, informed decision for their situation.

Sophie was an absolute star during her procedure and we’re happy to report she’s now fully recovered and doing really well🐶

☀️🐶 WEATHER WARNING FOR DOG OWNERS 🐶☀️

With temperatures reaching highs of 31°C in Cornwall, we’re urging pet owners to take extra precautions to keep dogs safe in the heat.
Heatstroke can develop rapidly and can be life-threatening. Dogs are especially vulnerable during warm weather, particularly brachycephalic breeds (frenchies, pugs, boxers), older dogs, overweight pets, and those with underlying health conditions.

⚠️ Signs of heatstroke include:
• Excessive panting
• Drooling
• Lethargy or weakness
• Vomiting or diarrhoea
• Collapse or seizures
✅ How to keep your dog safe:
• Walk dogs early morning or late evening
• Avoid hot pavements! If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for paws
• Never leave dogs in cars, even for a few minutes
• Ensure constant access to shade and fresh water
• Skip intense exercise during peak heat

🚨 If you suspect heatstroke:
Move your dog to a cool area, use cool (not ice-cold) water on their body, and contact your vet immediately.
Please help us spread the message and keep pets safe during the hot weather. 💛🐾

Did you know cats can donate blood and help save the lives of other cats? 🐱❤️

Pictured here is the lovely Dougie, who belongs to our Head Nurse, Clare. Recently, Dougie donated blood to help save the life of a cat in our care who urgently needed a blood transfusion.

Thanks to amazing donor cats like Dougie, life-saving treatment is possible for pets in need.

What a little hero! 🐱❤️

Meet handsome Afghan Hound, Khalif 🩶

After a long battle with chronic otitis externa, Khalif’s ear disease had progressed to the point where medical management, repeated ear flushing and ongoing treatment were no longer able to keep the infection under control. His ear canal was filled with pus and causing significant discomfort, so the decision was made to proceed with a TECA (Total Ear Canal Ablation) surgery.

A TECA involves removing the entire diseased ear canal. Although this can sound like a drastic procedure, it is often the best and most curative option for dogs suffering with severe, end-stage chronic ear disease. By removing the damaged and infected tissue completely, the source of ongoing pain and infection is eliminated, allowing patients to return to a far more comfortable quality of life.

The procedure was performed by our certificate holder in soft tissue surgery, Nazim Mukadam. The “before” image shows the extent of infection and chronic change within the ear canal, while the “after” image shows excellent healing following suture removal.

Khalif has recovered beautifully and has been the bravest boy throughout his treatment. We’re so pleased to see him feeling so much happier and more comfortable 💙
