Did you know that there is now evidence to suggest that a traditional spay may not be the best option for Golden Retrievers? ๐Ÿ’›

This is Sophie, who visited us recently for neutering. After discussing the options with her family, Christian, our RCVS Advanced practitioner in small animal surgery performed an ovarian sparing spay (OSS). This is a procedure that he has extensive experience of and would be happy to discuss with anyone with a golden retriever.

Current research suggests that removal of the ovaries (and thus removing the hormones they produce) can be associated with an increased risk of certain cancers, risks of orthopaedic disease and urinary incontinence. An OSS prevents pregnancy, bleeding during heat and pyometra but allows dogs like Sophie to maintain the benefits of oestrogen production.๐Ÿพ

An o***y sparing spay is not the right choice for everyone, but should be considered in Golden Retrievers. We are always happy to discuss the pros and cons of all neutering options so owners can make the best, informed decision for their situation.

Sophie was an absolute star during her procedure and weโ€™re happy to report sheโ€™s now fully recovered and doing really well๐Ÿถ

โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿถ WEATHER WARNING FOR DOG OWNERS ๐Ÿถโ˜€๏ธ

With temperatures reaching highs of 31ยฐC in Cornwall, weโ€™re urging pet owners to take extra precautions to keep dogs safe in the heat.
Heatstroke can develop rapidly and can be life-threatening. Dogs are especially vulnerable during warm weather, particularly brachycephalic breeds (frenchies, pugs, boxers), older dogs, overweight pets, and those with underlying health conditions.

โš ๏ธ Signs of heatstroke include:
โ€ข Excessive panting
โ€ข Drooling
โ€ข Lethargy or weakness
โ€ข Vomiting or diarrhoea
โ€ข Collapse or seizures
โœ… How to keep your dog safe:
โ€ข Walk dogs early morning or late evening
โ€ข Avoid hot pavements! If itโ€™s too hot for your hand, itโ€™s too hot for paws
โ€ข Never leave dogs in cars, even for a few minutes
โ€ข Ensure constant access to shade and fresh water
โ€ข Skip intense exercise during peak heat

๐Ÿšจ If you suspect heatstroke:
Move your dog to a cool area, use cool (not ice-cold) water on their body, and contact your vet immediately.
Please help us spread the message and keep pets safe during the hot weather. ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿพ

Did you know cats can donate blood and help save the lives of other cats? ๐Ÿฑโค๏ธ

Pictured here is the lovely Dougie, who belongs to our Head Nurse, Clare. Recently, Dougie donated blood to help save the life of a cat in our care who urgently needed a blood transfusion.

Thanks to amazing donor cats like Dougie, life-saving treatment is possible for pets in need.

What a little hero! ๐Ÿฑโค๏ธ

Meet handsome Afghan Hound, Khalif ๐Ÿฉถ

After a long battle with chronic otitis externa, Khalifโ€™s ear disease had progressed to the point where medical management, repeated ear flushing and ongoing treatment were no longer able to keep the infection under control. His ear canal was filled with pus and causing significant discomfort, so the decision was made to proceed with a TECA (Total Ear Canal Ablation) surgery.

A TECA involves removing the entire diseased ear canal. Although this can sound like a drastic procedure, it is often the best and most curative option for dogs suffering with severe, end-stage chronic ear disease. By removing the damaged and infected tissue completely, the source of ongoing pain and infection is eliminated, allowing patients to return to a far more comfortable quality of life.

The procedure was performed by our certificate holder in soft tissue surgery, Nazim Mukadam. The โ€œbeforeโ€ image shows the extent of infection and chronic change within the ear canal, while the โ€œafterโ€ image shows excellent healing following suture removal.

Khalif has recovered beautifully and has been the bravest boy throughout his treatment. Weโ€™re so pleased to see him feeling so much happier and more comfortable ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿพ Is your dog suddenly skipping on one back leg?

It may look harmless, especially if they quickly carry on as normal but it can sometimes be a sign of an underlying orthopaedic issue.

Common causes can include:
โ€ข Luxating patella (slipping kneecap)
โ€ข Cruciate ligament injury
โ€ข Hip problems
โ€ข Muscle or soft tissue strains
โ€ข Arthritis or joint pain

Some dogs will intermittently โ€œhopโ€ or hold the leg up for a few steps before using it normally again. If you notice persistent skipping or worsening lameness, you should always consult your vet for an examination.

At Cornwall Veterinary Referrals, our orthopaedic team can help investigate the cause with advanced imaging, diagnostics, and tailored treatment plans to keep your dog comfortable and active. ๐Ÿถ

If youโ€™re concerned about your petโ€™s mobility, call to book in for a check up.ย

Meet Frank the Frenchie! ๐Ÿพ

Frank recently came to us after taking a tumble off the bed during an overenthusiastic case of the zoomies. He was referred to us from his primary vets after becoming non weight-bearing on his left forelimb.

X-rays revealed a lateral humeral condylar fracture โ€” a break in the outer portion of the lower humerus (the bone above the elbow joint), a common but serious injury in small breeds like French Bulldogs.

Our orthopaedic surgeon, Christian Marchant, performed a surgical repair using a screw and wire technique to stabilise the fracture. Frank stayed with us overnight for monitoring and pain management before heading home to continue his recovery.

Weโ€™re happy to report that at his 6-week post-op check, Frank is doing wonderfully and well on his way back to his playful self ๐Ÿ’™

Great work, Frank!
