💚 Fact Friday 💚
Why is strength training good for your joints?

Stronger muscles act like built-in shock absorbers - they share the load, control joint position and smooth movement so your joints don’t have to handle everything on their own. That means more stable movement, improved control under load, and often less day-to-day strain on painful or sensitive areas.

Practical takeaway: include progressive, controlled strength work that targets the muscles around the joint (think slow, deliberate reps and good technique). Start light, build gradually, and focus on movement quality rather than heavy weights fast.

Gym Tip 🏋️‍♀️
Build a stronger, more resilient you by prioritising stability before chasing heavy loads.

Why it works: stability drills (controlled banded walks, single-leg stands, slow eccentric reps) teach your joints and nervous system to control movement - so when you add strength, it’s applied safely and effectively.

How to use it:
1) Start every session with 5-8 minutes of targeted stability for the joint you’ll load (hip, shoulder, ankle).
2) Follow with compound strength work.
3) Progress load only when control is consistent for 2-3 sessions.

Takeaway: Control first, then load - it reduces injury risk and improves performance.

Save this tip and try it next session. 🧠✅

💚 Fact Friday 💚
Tendon vs ligament - what's the difference?

Tendons connect muscle to bone and transfer the force that moves you. Ligaments connect bone to bone and stabilise your joints, limiting excessive movement.

Movement takeaway: train both - use controlled progressive loading (think slow, loaded movements) to build tendon resilience, and practise stability drills to help ligaments protect your joints during change-of-direction or impact. Start light and build gradually.

Runner’s Tip 🏃

Evidence-based cue for more efficient, pain‑free running: focus on a slightly forward lean from the ankles, not the hips. This small change helps your centre of mass move forward, reduces overstriding and cuts braking forces that stress knees and hips. Regardless of your speed you are aiming for a sprinter style running motion.
Try this drill: on a short, easy run for 5-10 minutes, keep your back straight, hinge slightly at the ankle and increase cadence by 5-10% without shortening your stride.
The takeaway: lean from the ankles + a small cadence tweak = smoother loading and a lower injury risk. 🏃‍♀️⚡️
Save this tip and try it on your next easy run - come back and tell us how it felt.

Why do ankle sprains keep coming back?

After a sprain, balance, strength, ankle movement, or your sense of joint position may not fully recover. Returning to activity before these have improved can raise the risk of another sprain.

Rehab often focuses on rebuilding strength and balance, then gradually returning to activity. The right approach depends on the individual—this is general education, not a personal diagnosis.
