With Christmas just around the corner, what would make a better present for the children in your life than Oliver Wingrave’s book ‘The Sweetie Kingdom’, a beautifully illustrated story that will captivate and delight readers aged 4–7 in equal measure.

Oli has been a prolific fundraiser for LAM Action over many years already, and he is very kindly donating 10% of all author royalties to the charity, so you would also be supporting us while crossing off some of your presents to buy!

Belated but huge congratulations to Andy Davidson and his mate Neil on completing their epic journey ‘Poppies & Purpose’ from Diss to Sarajevo and back in the trusty Car 25, their 25-year-old Škoda Fabia!

Andy is the father/father-in-Iaw of former LAM Action Trustees Adam and Harriet Davidson, and they undertook the journey to reflect Andy’s 25 years of British Army service, centred around remembrance, veterans and purpose, raising funds for LAM Action, alongside two other great charities Street First Aid and The Veterans Charity.

The pair travelled through 12 countries on their trip, which departed Diss on 26th September and arrived back on October 8th, visiting battlefields, memorials and cemeteries, and remembering the fallen with a nightly 10pm toast to Absent Friends.

Well done to you both, what an adventure and what a fantastic way to raise funds for some brilliant charities, thank you so much for your invaluable support.

The London & South East Support Group enjoyed a lovely get together on Saturday in London, which was very well attended. Thank you all for coming and we look forward to seeing even more of you in the spring!

Despite the unseasonably warm weather, we are definitely into autumn now, and so thoughts are turning towards Christmas. LAM Action is again selling a range of Christmas cards, with 4 lovely designs to choose from. We have managed to keep the pack prices the same again this year, but unfortunately we have had to make a slight increase to the postage cost.

The newly created South West Support Group will have their first meeting in Exeter on Saturday 24th October, beginning at midday.

Andy Davidson, who is the father/father-in-Iaw of former LAM Action Trustees Adam and Harriet Davidson, will soon be embarking on a voyage called Poppies & Purpose, a Veterans Honour Rally from Diss to Sarajevo and back, raising funds for LAM Action, alongside Street First Aid and The Veterans Charity.

Over to you Andy: “We leave on 26 September and return on 8 October, travelling through 12 countries in Car 25, our 25-year-old Škoda Fabia. The journey reflects my 25 years of British Army service and is centred around remembrance, veterans and purpose.

During my 25 years of service 702 British service personnel lost their lives on operations. The 702 poppies displayed on our car will represent every one of those lives. They are a visible reminder that behind every number is a person whose sacrifice should never be forgotten.

There’s also my very personal connection with LAM Action. Harriet Davidson, my daughter-in-law, is a LAM patient so supporting LAM Action makes this challenge particularly meaningful to our family.

We’d really appreciate it if the LAM community could share our journey across social media - every share helps us reach more people, raise awareness and, most importantly, raise more money for LAM Action.

Thanks so much for your support. We’re really looking forward to taking LAM Action with us on the journey.”

The next meeting of the London and SE support group will take place in Central London on Saturday October 17th at 2pm.

Prof Simon Johnson and long-standing LAM patient Helen Sabin have contributed to a wonderful BBC news item about the National LAM Centre in Nottingham. It’s generally an excellent piece which will help raise awareness of our very rare lung disease.

However, newly diagnosed LAM patients should ignore the sensationalist headline - even in 2008 a LAM prognosis was never as bad as Helen’s initial doctor suggested, and since then, as Simon explains and Helen’s story shows, we now have a successful treatment which has radically improved the outlook for patients.

Helen Sabin wants to support other patients, reduce fear and improve understanding.
