Our colleague Krzysztof joined Solo 8 months ago and now has a much better work / life balance in comparison to during his previous role in residential care. He has a passion for nature and enjoys spending as much time outdoors as possible walking with his dog, he is also a keen gardener. He really values the time he has for himself and can see the positive impact this has had on his overall happiness and wellbeing.

Gardening helps us to keep fit and connect with others and nature say the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). In 2021 the RHS released research from 6,000 people, that showed a significant association between gardening more frequently and improvements in wellbeing, perceived stress and physical activity.

We recently welcomed Alison from Unique and Loved to Head Office, where she delivered an engaging and thought-provoking workshop centred on understanding and embracing individuality in the workplace.

The session encouraged colleagues to reflect on their own unique qualities, build self-confidence but also to recognise the value that every individual brings to a team. Through open discourse and meaningful reflection, Alison explored how our thoughts, language, and behaviours can help foster inclusion or at times unintentionally, create barriers for others.

What made the workshop particularly impactful was its personal approach to EDI. Rather than focusing solely on difference, Alison highlighted the importance of self-awareness, individual needs, and self-actualisation, helping us better understand both ourselves and the people around us all. This too aligns closely with the values of person-centred support, reinforcing the importance of creating environments where people feel safe, valued, confident, and empowered to achieve their full potential.

We would like to thank Alison for delivering such a provocative and insightful session, as opportunities like these help us continue building a positive and inclusive culture that benefits all.

This week is Men’s Health Week, we’ve spoken to some of the men working for Solo Support Services to find out how they stay healthy. We hope their stories can inspire or motivate others to look after their physical and or mental health.

Our colleague Mark, pictured, is lucky to live in a rural area and makes the most of the scenic countryside on regular walks which he finds hugely beneficial for his mental and physical health.

Walking is an accessible and free exercise that brings multiple health benefits. Regular, brisk walking lowers blood pressure and reduces the risk of cardio vascular disease and stroke. It also aids weight management, strengthens bones and releases endorphins, serotonin and dopamine, which ease stress and anxiety and boost your mood.

The NHS Walking for Health guidelines state that just ten minutes per day has numerous health benefits.
