A NEW SENSORY SPACE

We recently visited our friends over at to see their newly refurbished sensory room.

You may not know but you can hire this fantastic space for private use by the hour. Prices start at approx £25 and to book you simply call or email Calvert Lakes directly.

This is a fantastic wet day option whilst staying with us at Rose Cottage and it’s close proximity to Keswick mean it can easily be paired with lunch in the town, a visit to the theatre, a walk along the accessible Keswick to Threlkeld path (see our previous ppotlight post) or along the shore of Derwent Water.

Calvert also has a fantastic accessible pool which can either be booked for prrivate use or you can opt to join one of their public swim sessions.

When you stay 7 nights or more at Rose Cottage, you can save up to £295.

We truly value our guests, and when a longer stay means we save we believe it’s only right to pass that saving directly on to you.

That’s why your cheapest night is free of charge when you book 7 nights or more, a saving of up to £295 during peak season.

Better still, if you stay longer than a week, we’ll pop by on day 8 to freshen up the cottage, change the linens and give it a clean while you’re out enjoying your holiday.

That’s why we are so proud to announce our brand-new partnership with Family Fund-a charity that gives essential grants and wider support to families raising disabled and seriously ill children.

To mark this partnership, we are committing £200 to £300 from every single direct booking staying at Rose Cottage during our Low Winter Rate period, to Family Fund.

Simply book a stay for an eligible date, between November 2026 and February 2027, on our website and a donation will be made for the benefit of Family Fund.

With Halloween just around the corner we thought we would share a few of the fantastic spooky events which are happening this year.

From family friendly spooky trails to adult only live experiences to ensure you scream!

Have you a favourite Halloween event in Cumbria?

Muncaster Castle offers two fantastic spooky events.

Halloween Family Festival
24 Oct - 1 Nov
This is for all the family with this years theme Zoombie and Boggles.
The event includes: pumpkin patch, a castle show, live music in the gardens, spooky trails, parades, the weapons hall and haunted castle, a costume competition and a torchlight march.

Scarecaster
29 - 31 October
This over 16 years event is where nightmares reign.
The event includes: a terrifying maze, zombie woodland walk, live music, silent disco, roaming monsters and a fire show. Not one of you scare easily!

Accessibility
The ground floor of the castle and main attractions are all accessible via a gravel path.
Some of the garden walks have limited access.
Carer tickets available (proof required)
1 mobility scooter available for hire (see website)

Theatre by the Lake, Keswick, Cumbria recently won the Inclusive Tourism Award from and we are proud ambassadors of the theatre allowing us to offer you discounted tickets with your stay. This is a great indoor option this Halloween.

Before The Lights Go Out

Step into a room filled with flickering light and shadows, where candles are extinguished one by one as each story unfolds. A fantastic spooky trip to the theatre leaving you haunted.

Talkin Tarn is a one of our favourite accessible nature reserves to visit with our family and this year it is bringing a Halloween Lantern Parade.

The Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway Co.Ltd known locally as the ‘lil ratty, is a wonderful train ride through the soaring hills. And, with a changing places on the platform it makes it a fantastic accessible day out.

☔️ Rainy days with your best friend ☔️

You may not have heard, but it sometimes rains in the Lake District- I know, we couldn’t believe it either!

But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered, figuratively speaking.

The great thing about the Lakes is that we have a huge amount of pubs, cafes and attractions which are both accessible and dog friendly 🐾

It may be raining outside, but there are still plenty of ways to enjoy the beauty of the landscape and our warm Cumbrian hospitality.

Here are a few of some of our top picks for escaping the rain with your four legged friend this winter.

RHEGED
We couldn’t not mention Rheged it’s a firm favourite in our household.

Located only 15 minutes from Rose Cottage, here you will find wet day fun for the whole family. Rheged has a truely delicious cafe, soft play, crafting, an Imax cinema, exhibits and a farm shop. Plus it has a Changing Places.

WINDERMERE LAKE CRUISES
Windermere Lake Cruises are a fantastic way to experence the lakeland views whatever the weather.

A fully enclosed cabin and a cafe on board for a cosy hot chocolate mean you can sit back, relax and enjoy the beautiful landscape that has inspired so many poets and artists.

You may wonder why we suggest Windermere over near by Ullswater. The answer is simple, Windermere cruises are bigger boats and can accommodate all wheelchair types (motor or manual, big or small). MV Swift also has an accessible toilet onboard.

Stop off and enjoy some of the dog friendly attractions around the lake such as Fell Foot or Brockhole.

DERWENT PENCIL MUSEUM
Derwent Pencil Museum is a fun, quirky, and budget friendly wet day option in the lakeside town of Keswick.

Home to the worlds largest pencil, the museum has interactive quizzes and some interesting history about pencils, including the wartime escape pencils.

Combine it with your choice of dog friendly cafes and pubs in Keswick for a great day out just 30minutes from Rose Cottage.
