8th of June to 14th June is PMR-GCA Awareness Week, organised by PMRGCAuk โ a UK charity dedicated to supporting those affected by Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR) and Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA). ๐
PMR often causes pain and stiffness in the shoulders, neck and hips, which can develop quickly over days or weeks. Itโs often worse first thing in the morning and may improve as you become more active.
Other symptoms can include:
โจ Extreme tiredness
โจ Loss of appetite
โจ Weight loss
โจ Depression
If pain and stiffness lasts longer than a week, itโs important to speak to your GP.
๐จ Seek urgent medical advice (GP or NHS 111) if you experience:
โข Sudden or frequent headaches
โข A sore or tender scalp
โข Jaw or tongue pain when eating or talking
โข Double vision or vision loss
These could be signs of Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA) and should be checked urgently.
Awareness weeks like this are so important for helping people recognise symptoms earlier, access support and feel less alone.
