Hot weather can pose unique health risks for the elderly, making it crucial to take extra precautions.

Clothing can make a big difference in staying safe during summer.

Older people should opt for:

Lightweight, loose-fitting clothes made from breathable fabrics like cotton or linen.

Light-coloured outfits, as these reflect sunlight and minimise heat absorption.

Accessories like wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses with UV protection, and umbrellas to shield from direct sunlight.

Don’t forget sun cream! Skin becomes thinner with age, making it more susceptible to sunburn. Use a broad-spectrum sun cream of at least SPF 15 and reapply throughout the day, especially if sweating or swimming.

Whilst the weather is glorious, we need to be aware of caring for elderly people in higher temperatures.

Older people are much more susceptible to heat-related illnesses.

This can be due to a combination of things such as a reduced ability to sweat, impaired heart function, and a greater likelihood of chronic health conditions and medications that interfere with temperature regulation.
