Is it death you are afraid of … or the dying process? No one can avoid - but we can have so much more control over our dying process. O one bats an eye when expectant mothers talk bout having birth plans - we need to be the same about death plans (and no, that’s not just a pre-paid funeral plan and a DNACPR order).

It’s official! I have successfully completed the first stage of my end of life doula training. I can now offer my services as an end of life companion and, if I successfully submit my progression assignment, I can go on to train for the full diploma. It will be a two year journey - but so very worth it if I can help families navigate the end of life journey.

It’s never too early to start your ‘deathmin’ journey. Preparing information for when your time (eventually) comes is not morbid - it’s an act of kindness that will benefit those you love when your heart has stopped beating. Don’t assume your loved ones will know what you want - if you haven’t told them, they won’t.
Grieving a loved one is hard enough without having to play hunt the will / life insurance policy / bank account details.

Ditto end-of-life education. Learn what you need to do to:
- ensure your family know what your wishes are as you approach you final days
- relieve your loved ones of the stress of uncertainty

It’s not just about having a pre-paid funeral plan … it’s about sharing your stories and making sure you leave nothing unsaid.

Far better than saying: ‘I’m not bothered - just burn me.’

Two part post:
Part one: this book … beautifully navigates the narrative of an old man’s final days. Clearly but sensitively signposts the shifts from old age abc frailty into the final stages of life. Sad … but uplifting too, strangely. Also the important role of someone being there as an amicus mortis, gently guiding a reassuring. Beautiful.

Part Two: Yeaterday I met with a wonderful family. They had lost their exceptional wife / mum to pancreatic cancer barely 8 weeks after her diagnosis. Heart-breaking enough. What was worse was that no one - including the team at their local hospice - was prepared to speak with them about what happens when someone is actively dying, the signs and stages indicating what is happening. This seemed to be borne from a reluctance to be specific for fear of being … wrong? Sued? I do not know - but it did not help her daughters and husband process what was happening to this lovely lady.
We HAVE to start talking more openly about death and dying.
