When does a yoga instruction become your own knowledge?
Not when you can repeat it.
Not even when you can perform it.
It becomes knowledge when you can observe what it changesâand understand why.
A teacher may ask you to straighten the leg, turn the thigh, shift the weight or open the chest. But the real study begins when you investigate:
What changed in the structure of the pose?
Where did the effort move?
Did the breath become restricted or free?
Did the action create stability, space or lightness?
This is how an Äsana gradually reveals its different planes.
We begin with the physical: the geometry of the body and the relationship between the limbs and joints.
With closer attention, the practice becomes physiological: muscles reorganise, weight moves towards the bones, and effort becomes more intelligent.
The exploration may then reach the organic and prÄášic planes, influencing the abdominal space, pelvic floor, chest, breath and movement of energy.
As the senses become quieter, the pose may lead towards a more inward, meditative state.
This understanding must include the whole journeyânot only the final shape:
Entering the Äsana.
Staying and studying within it.
Coming out without losing awareness.
The teacherâs instruction may open the door. Your observation, experimentation and reflection allow you to walk through it.
Think of one instruction you have heard many times. What did you understand differently when you truly explored it?
Share your observation in the comments. Your experience may help another practitioner look again.
