Is it time to think about a possible summer holiday in this country or further afield?

For many people this can bring on a whole new wave of worry and anxiety for many different reasons.

Some of the key factors contributing to travel anxiety include:
• Social pressures: interacting with family or friends, social
anxiety, managing expectations, or navigating conflicts
• Travel stress: planning concerns, afraid of getting lost, fear of
flying/travel, fear of delays, fear of crowds or busy airports or
concerns about safety and comfort
• Phobias: e.g Fear of spiders/bugs, heights, flying, water
• Routine disruption: changes in sleep, diet, or daily schedules
can exacerbate stress
• Perfectionism: unrealistic expectations for a flawless holiday
experience
• Past experiences: such as a traumatic event or illness while
away, a stressful holiday trip, lost baggage or natural disaster

By recognizing triggers holiday anxiety can be managed effectively, allowing you to enjoy the season with greater calm and balance.

Social Anxiety - This is more than shyness. It's a fear that does not go away and affects everyday activities, self-confidence, relationships or work and can significantly disrupt a person’s life.

Do you recognise any of these?
• The crippling fear of being judged
• Overthinking every single conversation
• The constant urge to cancel plans
• Avoiding situations/events that may trigger you
• The feeling of being an outsider (even with people you know)
• Overwhelming physical symptoms (panic attacks)

Everybody’s mind works a little differently, having anxiety, low self-esteem, fears, phobias or habits does not mean you are broken and need fixing, it just means you may need a little help to overcome some past outdated beliefs about yourself or things around you. It’s like having a MindReset!

Anxiety & Fear are safety mechanisms, our minds put up barriers to things that might potentially hurt us or upset us, effectively building walls against negative experiences.

But as we grow and get older and more knowledgeable these barriers can become restrictive making things we now want to do harder due to these old limiting beliefs.

Now instead of protecting us from whatever our fears or anxieties are related to in the world they start protecting the outside world from us. They have become our prison!
The safety barriers have become our prison walls and it’s time to pull them down!

Even if consciously, we know it’s now an unwanted belief or behaviour our subconscious will hold on to this until it is given a reason to change.

We live in a world of quick fixes, trying to convince us that instant gratification is the way forward. Quick fixes are everywhere, promising overnight transformation sometimes for complex issues.

Once tried we can then begin to crave the dopamine hit from quick changes, instant results, and visible progress. But most times these quick fixes fail as they do not deal with root cause or underlying issue and only give us temporary happiness. Each “failure”, as many clients perceive it, knocks their self-esteem and reduces confidence.
Ultimately, lasting change requires self-reflection and consistency, a change in mindset:

So -
Why do crash diets only to find we go back to old habits? – instead of dealing with the reasons why we eat the things we do

Why do the six week intense exercise programme that deep down we know is not sustainable? – instead of looking at why we haven’t incorporated sustainable exercise into our life

Why avoid taking that holiday or take something for the nerves every trip? - instead of dealing with the fear of flying?

Why avoid visits to the countryside or garden because of our fear of spiders? – this leaves many places we can’t go maybe leading to regret or missing out.

“You can’t affect the cards that are dealt, but you can determine how you play them”

This is something we hear a lot but what does it mean to you?

Maybe that we do not have control over the circumstances life hands us?
But remember we do possess the power to choose how we respond and make the most of these cards.

Some people may seem to have all the good cards?
But really, we have no idea what other people are dealing with!
Everyone has challenges and obstacles that come their way. Don’t let these cards leave you feeling stuck without a way forward.

Remember our mindset can be transformed so our actions can be more positive ultimately leading to happiness. However, we all know this is easier said than done & change is scary; but even scarier is staying exactly where you are if you are not happy with the cards dealt you.

So, what can you do?
1. Accept Your Hand
You may not have chosen these cards but there’s no point just wishing things were different. Accept your circumstances whatever they are; because once you embrace what you have in your hands, then you’re ready to build something with it or change it and move forward.

2. Identify Where You Actually Have Control
Too many people waste time worrying about things outside their control. The past has gone and cannot be changed and the future hasn’t happened yet. Worrying about worst case scenarios and what ifs are a waste of energy. However, the present, the here and now is where you can control your emotions and reactions to life challenges & create a way forward.

3. Make Conscious Choices
Don’t just sit back and let life happen. Every decision, no matter how small, is a chance to move closer to or further from mindset & life you want. Be willing to review and adjust your path as you go.

Your Only Limit Is Your Mind!

Are you stuck with a negative mindset or habits that are stopping you achieving your goals?

Focusing on potential failures rather than opportunities for growth can lead to procrastination stopping you moving forward leading to self-doubt & low self-esteem.

Are you stuck with certain behaviours or thoughts leaving you without the confidence, motivation or belief in yourself to take the next step?

However, negative mindset becomes a “habit”. A client once said “I have always been this way so I’ve given up!” - Where can you go or what can you achieve when you feel like this?

The point is, breaking a bad habit or mindset will always be easier if you substitute this with a new (more desirable) behaviour that serves how you want to be or the direction you want to move in.

“I often hear a client say, “I just want to be back to the old me.”
They constantly scan the way they feel and compare it to the memories of how they used to feel (but only usually remembering the positive highlights). But, by doing this they deny all the changes they have made since making them the person they now are & instead interpret this to be a continuing problem. They are stuck in a negative mindset, anxiety or maybe depression or holding on to unhelpful beliefs or behaviour patterns.

The simple fact is you can’t go back to the old you, that person didn’t know what you know now or have the experiences you have since had. We simply can’t turn back time or unlearn the things we learnt back then or since.

It is important to acknowledge that personal growth often comes from overcoming challenges and adapting to new circumstances. By shifting focus from longing for the past to appreciating progress, we begin to cultivate resilience and self-compassion.

We don’t sail forward by looking out the back of the boat. It’s time to let go of who we were and embrace who we are and what we can become.
