The Wedding We Never Imagined and the Care Home That Made It Possible
When I got engaged, like every bride, I started thinking about the wedding day. But there was one thing that mattered more to me than flowers, dresses or decorations.
My dad.
My dad is a resident at The Cottage Christian Care home and because of his health, I knew he wouldn’t be able to leave the home and attend our wedding. The thought of him missing such a huge milestone in my life broke my heart. But, instead of accepting that my dad couldn’t come to the wedding I spoke to the wonderful team at the care home and asked a much more important question…
“Can we bring the celebration to him?”
From that moment on, nothing was too much trouble. They welcomed us with open arms! The already busy manager dealt with the legalities with patience and the amazing administrator helped us organise anything and everything that I suggested.
When I wanted to transform their garden into a beautiful wedding setting with flowers, lanterns, chairs and a wedding arch, it was no bother for them. The gardener even gave up his free time to ensure everything was dug, planted, trimmed and pretty, just so my dad could be at the very heart of our celebrations.
And on the wedding day, for a few precious hours, it wasn’t a care home. It was a wedding venue. Our families shared love & laughter and the staff celebrated alongside us. The residents smiled and the team shared their joy. Photographs were taken, music was played and most importantly, my dad was there. Not watching from afar. Not hearing about it afterwards. He was part of it. As his daughter, I cannot begin to explain what that meant to me.
The home didn’t simply help us organise a celebration. They gave me memories with my dad that I will treasure for the rest of my life.
I wanted to share our story because it’s easy to forget that behind every resident, is a family still celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, weddings and life’s special moments.
The team at The Cottage recognised just how important those moments are and embraced them with us. They didn’t just care for my dad. For one unforgettable day, they cared for all of us.
From the bottom of my heart, I thank each of the staff for their kindness, compassion and for reminding us that a care home can be so much more than where people live. It can be a place where memories are remembered and can continue to be made.
And because of the whole team at the Cottage, when I look back on my wedding day, one of the happiest memories I’ll hold, is seeing my dad comfortable, present and surrounded by the people who love and care for him every single day.
That is a gift our family will never, ever forget.
