Does your child wiggle, fidget, tap or move around while they’re trying to learn?

It can be easy to assume that movement means they aren’t listening or paying attention. But for some children, movement can actually help them to focus, regulate and engage.

FACT: Movement can support attention and regulation. Some children may concentrate better when they have an appropriate way to move, such as changing position, using a fidget or having regular movement breaks.

Rather than asking, “Why can’t they sit still?” it can be helpful to ask:

“What does their body need to help them concentrate?”

Every child is different, and the right sensory strategies can make a real difference to how comfortable and ready they feel to learn.

Back to school can be a big adjustment for children, even when they seem excited to return.

It’s easy to expect children to quickly settle back into their routines after the summer holidays, but the transition can take time.

FACT: Some children may need several weeks to adjust to new routines, different expectations, busy classrooms, increased demands and changes to their sleep pattern.

You might notice your child becoming more tired, emotional, clingy or overwhelmed during those first few weeks. This doesn’t necessarily mean they’re struggling at school — it may simply be their way of adjusting to a change in routine.

Be patient, offer plenty of reassurance and remember that settling in isn’t always instant.

Every child is different, so give them the time and support they need to find their feet again.
