Hello everyone,

With the upcoming warm weather forecast, Wakefield Safeguarding Children Partnership would like to share a reminder about the potential dangers around open water. We know that children, young people, and families may be spending more time outdoors, and it's important that we help raise awareness of the risks.

Key Water Safety Guidance (for CYP, families, and practitioners)

🔹 Cold Water Shock: Sudden immersion in open water—even in warm weather—can cause an involuntary gasp, rapid breathing, and heart strain. This is one of the biggest risks for strong and weak swimmers alike.

🔹 Hidden Hazards: Open water often contains unseen dangers such as strong currents, weeds, sudden drop-offs, and debris. These hazards can trap or disorient swimmers.

🔹 Supervision Near Water: Children and young people should be closely supervised around rivers, lakes, reservoirs, canals, and even garden ponds. Drowning can be silent and fast.

🔹 Jumping Into Water: Jumping or diving into unknown water can lead to serious injury due to submerged objects or shallow areas.

🔹 Inflatables Warning: Inflatables can easily be swept away by wind or currents. They are safest in supervised pools, not open water.

🔹 What To Do in an Emergency: If someone is in trouble:

Call 999 and ask for the Coastguard (coastal) or Fire & Rescue (inland)
Use the “Reach or Throw, Don’t Go” principle
Keep eyes on the person and guide emergency services to the location

Our campaigns encourage people to respect the water, educating them how to enjoy the water safely and what to do in an emergency.

Please educate your children/teenagers of the dangers of open water ! Dont let them be per pressured by their friends or think it won’t happen to them! Water safety is a must to learn your children ! Swimming is a life long skill to learn and also the importance of swimming where it’s safe not at any point in open water ! It’s so sad young lives are being lost this way! Know where your children are and learn them the safety basics.

With over a quarter of the British population unable to swim competently to the Primary School standard of at least 25 metres and with swim schools across the country offering swimming lessons for babies, toddlers, children, teens and adults, it is never too early or too late to take the plunge and learn this important life skill.
Learning to swim from a young age will help children gain water confidence, water sense and skills if they were to find themselves out of their depth unexpectedly.

Swimming along with ensuring children have the best possible start to life is something I’m very passionate about. Coming from a family background of swimmers within my family I had no option as a child to learn to swim from a young age, which then developed into competitive swimming throughout my childhood and teenage life . When having a family of my own I created 3 competitive swimming children that followed in my footsteps, with another one along with my grandchildren who will be following suit .

Not only am I doing childminding I am also a fully qualified swim teacher /baby swim teacher and life guard. This has allowed me to not only look after my childminding children but also give them the experiences of being in the pool and gaining water confidence from such a young age . I try to take the children in my care as often as I can to build on these water skills in a fun safe environment.

These two little fishes have been in my care for a long time now and have blossomed into confident children in the water. Albert went from being terrified of the water for weeks on end to now confidently entering the water safely and jumping in and out with support, allowing water to be sprinkled on his face and do scoops and kicks with aids across the pool.
Arabella is so confident in the water and will confidently jump in and out without support, do star floats on her back with no aids and minimum support from myself and today managed to swim a short distance on her back independently.
I’m so proud of how far they have come in both developing in and out of the water ❤️💙
