FLU CLINICS

If you are eligible, you will shortly start to receive a text message appointment to book a flu vaccination here at the practice.

Our clinics are running a little later in October this year due to delays with vaccination deliveries.

It’s really important, that if you make an appointment and no longer need it, to cancel your appointment.

Missed appointments result in wasted vaccinations which comes at a cost to the practice and the NHS.

From Monday 24 August, there will be a small change to how people access Urgent Treatment Centres (UTCs) at Buxton, Ilkeston, Ripley and Whitworth hospitals. The changes are being introduced to help manage increasing demand and ensure patients are assessed and directed to the most appropriate service.

All four UTCs will remain open from 8am to 8pm, seven days a week, the changes relate to how people can access UTCs in the evening.

Opening and access arrangements from Monday 24 August:

Ilkeston, Ripley and Whitworth UTCs
Walk-in (no appointment needed): 8am–5pm
Appointment only (via NHS 111): 5pm–8pm

Buxton UTC
Walk-in (no appointment needed): 8am–4pm
Appointment only (via NHS 111): 4pm–8pm

What you need to do:

During walk-in hours, you can still attend a UTC without an appointment, but we always encourage people to contact NHS 111 first to be assessed and directed to the most appropriate service.

Outside walk-in hours, access is by appointment only by calling NHS 111.

These changes will help ensure UTC services continue to provide safe and effective care for local people while making sure patients receive treatment in the most appropriate setting.

To help you get the right care, first time:

❗️ For minor illnesses and injuries, consider self-care and advice from your local pharmacy first. Pharmacists can advise on a wide range of conditions and treatments without an appointment.

❗️ For urgent but non-life-threatening conditions, contact NHS 111 (online at 111.nhs.uk or by calling 111). NHS 111 will assess your symptoms and, where appropriate, arrange an appointment at a UTC or direct you to another suitable service.

❗️ In a life-threatening emergency, always call 999 or go to A&E.

New NHS England data has highlighted concerns about the low numbers of people in their 50s taking part in free bowel cancer screening.

In England, the NHS sends free bowel cancer screening kits to people aged 50 to 74 every two years. The screening age in England has gradually lowered from 60 to 50 in recent years - a change championed by 'Bowelbabe' Dame Deborah James. People need to be registered with a GP to get their kit in the post. The simple at-home test, called a faecal immunochemical test (FIT), requires a small sample of poo and can help to detect signs of bowel cancer before symptoms appear.

The programme helped diagnose around 100 cases of bowel cancer each week on average between April 2024 and March 2025. However, screening uptake was lower among people in their 50s, with just over half of 54-year-olds completing their test, compared to almost three-quarters of people age 70-74.

Cancer Research UK's Chief Executive Michelle Mitchell says, "We know catching cancer earlier boosts people's chances of survival and it's concerning that fewer people in their 50s are taking up the chance to do these quick and easy at-home tests in England.

"We encourage everyone who's eligible to consider taking part in bowel screening."

Completing the FIT at home can be as quick as making a cup of tea and those few minutes could be lifesaving. Screening is for people without symptoms, so if you spot something that doesn't feel right, speak to your GP. It probably won't be cancer but, if it is, catching it early can make a real difference.
